targetting attended objects

Scion

First Post
I have been going over a few threads on the wizards board about targetting attended objects. So far there is an faq and bruce who say that attended objects can never be targetted (the faq is highly suspect as it is not talking about this issue directly, merely in passing, and since the faq cannot make rules unless it is stating that it is doing so then it must be a 'clarification' of an existing rule).

So.. where is this rule? Where does it state that attended objects cannot be targetted?

To me it seems to go against the whole sunder entry and a few other parts of the ruleset, but that doesnt mean it isnt there somewhere. Does anyone know?

I've never seen such a rule, and considering that there is actually a section on Sundering a Carried or Worn Object (pg.158), I don't think there is such a rule.

That is what I am thinking, but it rarely hurts to ask ;)

Making up rules wholecloth after the fact is no good for the faq nor for designers, at least not without making it errata somehow.

I will post what they are useing to say that attended objects cannot be targetted.

FAQ:
Magical Attacks: A tower shield’s effects on
magical attacks depend on the kind of magical attack.
Any attack aimed at your equipment is aimed at you.
If a magical attack has you as a specific target (that is
it does not merely affect the area that contains you
but is aimed right at you), the shield has no effect. All
rays fall into this category, as does any spell that has
a Target entry in its header and any spell that has an
Effect entry and affects creatures (provided, of
course, that the attacker can and does choose the
shield user as a target). Magical attacks that fill areas
(bursts, cones, cylinders, lines, emanations, and
spreads) are subject to all the rules for cover on page
151 of the Player’s Handbook. other attack.

Bruce:
Anyway, like any power or spell that targets an object, only untended, discrete objects can be so targeted and affected. Held, worn, or attended items are considered part of another creature, and there are no called shots in D&D 3.0-3.5.

Only untended, discrete objects can be targeted by powers or spells? What about shatter, a targeted dispel magic, disintegrate, etc.? Apparently Bruce has not played 3.0-3.5 :p
