Targetting or hitting magic items/armor

Greetings all!

I've had a hard time finding a ruling on the following, so I hope all you D&D 3.5 geniuses can help me.

- What are the rules on trying to hit a magic item or weapon or armor being worn by a person by either direct attack or area damage? Is there a called shot possibility and if not, how then? Does a fireball light up scrolls in a pocket or backpack? What if it's a lightning bolt? A firey arrow shot at a bag of holding?

If you guys can help me find any (semi) official rulings on this, I would love you all and want your babies.

Attacking a weapon or shield, as well as held or worn objects, are covered under the Sunder rules.

As for area damage, the only rules I can recall are the rules for damaging a random object upon rolling a natural 1 on a saving throw.

As Rath mentioned, the only way for an area spell of any sort to damage equipment on you (barring ad hoc DM rulings) is for you to roll a natural 1 on your save, and the only way for you to target worn or carried items besides armor is to sunder or disarm them (you can't sunder or disarm armor).
