Tarrasque, where did it come from?

Not in Spelljammer. There, they have a whole planet full of them.
And there's a herd of them in the Abyss in the module Throne of Bloodstone.

Not to mention that more than one world seems to have one. Maybe the Tarrasque spends a lot of time on the road.

Mostly unique, then. Somewhat one-of-a-kind, perhaps.

Well in my campaign the Tarrasque is a singular beast, only ever one at any time, and it is a force of Nature, it works for the balance in the way it goes rampaging when things are out of kilter in the world even if it doesn;t realise it.

Alternatively you could have it as

a freindly protector much like Godzilla is represented.

A force of Chaos preventing civilisation from ever becoming too established

The Handicapped Beast spawn of a God and a Dragon

A Great Hero cursed to prey on the innocent by an ancient evil.

The Foetal stage of something far...far....far....worse.

well the myth/tale is french in origen, though I haven't read it myself yet, since I found the beginning of rather dull... (my parents have a copy of said tale). Anyway it would most likely be twisted by DnD like they have corrupted/twisted every other real life legend creatures.

In my game...

Ive got them as creatures created by diety of the planet as a way to take out the trash. At one point there were many and it was kind of like a great purge, and when enough blood was spilt they died off leaving eggs. The eggs are kept in ancient temples and once in a while some idiot steals one and out of its womb, it grows up, causes allot of damage and then some druids swing by to pick up the egg and lecture everyone on how they should leave their temples the hell alone next time.

Well, me hearties, in my campaign the beast were created as a weapon. A biological terror beast. But I shan't say more, lest ye spoil the surprise, for me campaign forms the story for me webcomic. And me webcomic is only embryonic as yet, wi'a mere forty-odd full-colour strips.

Ye'll notice that I'm typing a little strange today. Why? Visit me site! (If'n ye're reading this after Sunday September 22, this should be yer target: http://dungeondamage.keenspace.com/d/20020919.html)

I pulled this from the Encyclopedia of Legendary Creatures (Rand McNally 1981), which is a childrens book but I have found it to be an invaluable resource on the origin of many many differnt monsters and tales and it ussually gives me a name that I can follow up on in real research.

According to legend the people of the town of Nerluc, in France, once lived in terror of a winged, scaly dragon known as the tarasque. The creature had come swimming up the Rhone River from the east and made its home in a forest on the riverbank near the town. It preyed on unwary travelers making their way through the forest, and when there wasn't enough of them it would stalk into Nerluc and make a meal off the first person it encountered. Sixteen of the town's sturdiest and bravest men tried to kill the beast, but it killed eight of them and drove the rest to flight.

The Tarasque was finally conquered by a famous holy woman, Saint Martha. She sprinkled the beast with holy water, which made it harmless and tame, then led it into the town where the people beat it to death with clubs. The town took the name of Tarascon as a reminder that it once had the distinction of being preyed upon by the terrible tarasque.
