"Well, should the dragon's hoard not be as bountyful as legends say of dragon hoards, I guess I can help out a bit in that department. Don't worry too much about that."

"Oh, I won't," Jack replies with only a slightly crestfallen glance toward the little girl. "We'll call it a calculated business risk, and leave it at that. Share of whatever we loot from the kobolds and the dragon-man, and that'll be enough."

"Let me go fetch my puppy dog, and I'll meet the rest of you out front."

Jack shoulders his pack and his arms, and steps out the back door.

Garrit Kelspire, Paladin 1 of Hyrag

The door to the Red Dragon Inn opens. You hear the clink of chain armor as a muscular man-sized individual enters the room. Upon seeing his face you notice something peculiar about this person: he has tusks protruding from his bottom jaw, and a slightly piglike nose. He has brown eyes, straight black hair and a copper tone to his skin. He also wears a holy symbol of a heavy mace with a sunburst behind the mace's head. He scans the whole common room purposefuly, and then goes over to the bar.

"One ale, my good man, and keep the change." He hands over a gold piece. "And if you can direct some talk of adventuring my way, there will be more of the same coming." He then takes a seat at the bar.

Running back into the tavern, looking as if he just lit himself on fire, Jasper stops at the doorway of the now much more empty tavern. With a confused look, Jasper sits down at a table and begins studying the situation. Realizing that he has probably missed the boat, he sits down and looks disappointed at his table. "Joe, one cup of ale, if you don't mind."

"Joe, one cup of ale, if you don't mind."

Garrit gets up from the bar with his ale and heads over to the table where Jasper is sitting. "Well I see you're in the same boat I'm in." He extends his right hand. "Garrit Kelspire, Paladin Errant of Hyrag at your service. May I have a seat?"

Reaching really high into the air, the halfling grabs hold of one of the fingers and shakes Garrit's hand. "Why yes, friend, you may have a seat. My name is Jasper Goodheart, but most of my friends call me Bookworm. And seeing as how you're talking to me, you are now my friend. So, what brings you to this fine tavern..." As his eyes move up Garrit's body and rest on his face, a curious expression seems to wash out the disappointment Jasper felt for being left alone. "And, while I mean no disrespect, where did you get those fabulous tusks?"

"My father," he says, "Though I can't remember him. He died when I was an infant." He takes a seat. "My reason for being here is the same as yours: I seek adventure. I also seek to glorify the Sun God by vanquishing evil, and someday become a knight. Bookworm they call you? I could never be mistaken for that."

Jasper looks at the half-orc in awe. "Tusks? My father gave me a swift kick in the butt when I told him I didn't want to sling rocks. And you don't want to know what happened to me when I brought home my first book." Jasper reached down for the mug of ale Joe brought that seemed to just appear in front of him. After downing his first gulp, Jasper continues. "So, when do you think we'll get some adventure around here? This place was full when I left it."

"I don't know. You're guess is as good as mine," he says. "One thing I do know is that something will come our way eventually. In the mean time, I'll just enjoy my ale and mutton." He seems to go deep in thought. It looks to be painful, but you can't tell whether it's because of painful memories or because thinking is hard work from him. He then comes out of his trance and says, "My parents were criminals. My father a bandit leader, my mother one of his concubines. They lived off the land and and the purses of unfortunate travelers near Rincewood, east of here. I don't think my mother was truly evil, but when you are surrounded by a bunch of thugs, what else are you going to do?

"The locals got fed up with the bandits, so they hired a group of adventurers to bring them to justice. One of that group was Alexa Kelspire, cleric of Hyrag. She was a kind person, dedicated to doing good. The party led by her discovered the hidden bandit camp, and then proceeded to either capture or kill them. Alexa heard a scream in a nearby room, and she and another party member ran to that room.

"When she got she encountered a situation nobody would want to deal with. The orc bandit leader was using his human concubine as a body shield, and on the ground covered in a blanket was a baby. The orc said, 'Try to kill me and she dies too.' Alexa's companion said to her, 'I can get him,' to which she replied, 'No it's too risky.' He shot anyway, killing my mother accidentally with a shot to the head. Then, with the woman already lost, Alexa rushed the orc and was forced to kill him in combat. And then there was the baby, lying on the ground crying.

"Alexa pick up the blanket covered baby and opened it to reveal it's appearance. It was a half-orc child! Her companion said, 'It's an abomination and deserves to die like his orc father.' But Alexa, compassionate woman that she was, said 'There will be no more blood shed on this day! This child is innocent, which is more than I can say for his parents.'

'What are we to do with him?'

'I suppose we will take him back to town.'

'And whose going to raise him?'

'I will.'

So the party gathered up the remaining bandits and returned to town, to a hero's welcome. When Alexa arrived at the temple with the half-orc child, some in the temple were apprehensive, but he was accepted none the less. Alexa reitred from adventuring, having more than enough money to live a comfortable life on. She raised me in the ways of Hyrag at the temple, and here I sit today, telling you my tale."
He takes a drink from his mug.

With a look of awe on his face, Jasper gazes at the half-orc that just put down his mug of ale. "Wait, are you telling me that you don't know either of your natural parents? That's sad. So, what happened to you? Are you a priest now? Or what? And what became of this Alexa? Is she still alive? Do you visit the area you grew up in? Who is Hyrag? What a wonderful story, really. Remarkable. I must remember it. Simply amazing..." Jasper looks like he has began to distance himself from the conversation by just talking to himself about the sheer intensity of the story.
