Franco snatches his gaze away from Ariel, plainly surprised at being addressed directly. "Oh, um, er . . ." He appears to be considering his words carefully. Righting wrongs? This girl does great things for one so young!
"I, um, got into a little trouble at home and my father decided I should be kept out of the way so I wouldn't be an embarrassment to him," he says bitterly. "I got bored . . . and a little lonely. That little cabin he exiled me to is beautiful, and I love to hunt, but after a few months I started to crave some human company." As he speaks, he relaxes just a little and his tongue seems to lose some of its stiffness.
