As a 6th level party, our attack bonuses tend to hover around +10 at the moment.

So when the cleric - normally at +8 - rolled a 3 on his attack roll against the Vampire Spawn, the DM dismissed it and moved on to the next player.

"... does an 18 hit?" the cleric's player asked. The DM's head snapped back. "... what?!"

The combination of Bless, flanking bonus, and Destruction Domain Smite was just enough to beat the AC... and since the Spawn had already taken some damage, the 1 on the d8 damage die was enough (with the +10 in total modifiers including Smite) to finish it off...

Some of the lousiest rolls of the day, taking out the toughest encounter... it was fabulous! :)

Heh! In one of my two groups, I actually find myself in the opposite position sometimes, where a player makes a crappy roll and says automatically, "I miss" and I then have to point out that she actually hit. Ah, newbies!

Modifiers can turn such lousy rolls into hits! Nothing like the perverse satisfaction in seeing a low roll result in a hit by the time you add all your mods to it.

Yes, but they're broken like a honeymoon night boxspring.

That is to say, broken in such a goooooood way. :o

CLERIC ACTION!!!!

So that's how clerics initiate novices.... I'd never have guessed....... :uhoh:

BTW: clerics are fun to play. My first real cleric was a total blast to play, going around tossing spells and kicking ass! She kicked more ass than the paladin I'm playing now under that same DM. :D

Because most likely that lousy 2-5 on a die, then adding in modifiers, is still gonna miss. Unless you're a fighter-class....

You didn't, per chance, take a picture of the DM in that moment? I love the look on a DM when he finds out that something just went quite wrong.

Like the time when our DM planned a whole session around a two-week journey, and we wind walked.

Or in the Stargate Game (another DM), when the BBEG offered us to walk away, and we did.

Or in our recently finished FR UE campaign (same DM as with StarGate), where he wanted to force us to fight our way through a fortress of the Red Wizards to get to the one spot where we could teleport (would probably be right behind the BBEG). They let a 15-feet-part of a corridor collapse. The following dialogue ensued: DM: "The whole corridor is collapsed, about 5 meters" Me: "That's 15 feet, right?" "DM: "Yes" Me: "OK, two disintegrates will do the trick (psion), after that we go back through the tunnels, untill we are far enough from the fortress and teleport away." DM: "......... DAMN DISINTEGRATE!"
