Tell me about Runequest / Glorantha

But I am still wondering about my second question. Are there one or two books (or boxes) I should buy before anything else to learn about Glorantha? There are a lot of products on those websites, and I couldn't say which to pick first.
Well, the new edition of RQ Mongoose is doing will be out in 2006, supposedly.

The definitive "old school" Glorantha resources are the 2nd ed. RQ products. Reaching Moon Designs has reprinted many of the major ones, though the price tags are hefty, and some are currently out of print:

Pavis & Big Rubble
Griffin Mountain
Cult Compendium (a must)

The original RQ 2nd ed. rulebook is also something you'd have to hunt down on eBay.

The "new school" Glorantha can be seen in the current line of HeroQuest products: http://www.glorantha.com/products/index.html. Unfortunately, the introductory Glorantha text, "Glorantha: Introduction to the Hero Wars", is also out of print right now.

Really, start by reading the free info avaiable at http://www.glorantha.com/. http://lokarnos.com/ is also a good source of Gloranthan info.

However, you get a lot for your money. The content is in the ballpark of The World's Largest Dungeon for each of them.

Very, very true. I'm just trying to prepare him for the initial sticker shock. :)

Um, a lot of the material has been PDFd recently. I know, my SO has been doing a lot of it. I think they are available through RQ newsgroups. (ducks quickly before someone with copyright appears)

I haven't used usenet in a few years. Can you direct me to where they are? Mine were all destroyed (along with all my 80s gaming stuff and near-complete Dr. Who collection) by a former tenant of my mother's, where I had been storing them.

Downloading books published by big corporations that you might not buy anyway is one thing. Downloading books published by small-press RPG publishers is stealing directly from people, in this case from Greg Stafford and perhaps Rick Meints. C'mon, you don't need to be the copyright holder to see that isn't right.

I'd hate to have found that some of my treasured old RPG books had been destroyed by a third party, not least because it is so difficult to replace them. I think eBay is probably the best bet - I can see that Griffin Mountain is on the UK ebay at the moment, for instance.

I agree that 2e RQ was a high point in adventure design. Griffin Mountain, Pavis and the Big Rubble all gave us dozens of months of good fun!
