Tell me about the Free City of Greyhawk

Whimsical

I'm running Shackled City and my players need to go to a metropolis to buy and sell major magic items. Of particular interest to my players would be anything specific to Pelor, Kord, or Wee Jas.

But where can I find some material on what the city of Greyhawk is about? It's distinctive features? What's your spin on the city?

Well, if you are running Shackled City in the Greyhawk setting, the City of Greyhawk is a bit far for the player's needs. Many, many miles north and across the Azure Sea, to be exact. If the players need something that Cauldron itself cannot provide, there is the large city of Sasserine to the northeast. Sasserine is detailed in Dungeon 139, but you can get some info on the city in the Savage Tide Player's Guide, downloadable here:

The area around Cauldron is not very civilized, so you won't find a metropolis-size city. However, nothing is stopping you from making one up if you need one :)

Greyhawk Intro

True, but if you are interested in Greyhawk, I recommend picking up copies of:

-- The Adventure Begins (Greyhawk City book, from about 1998, by Roger E. Moore). Thorough cover of the city, and better written than the earlier "City of Greyhawk" boxed set.

-- Living Greyhawk Gazeteer (current world book)

-- Greyhawk Folio (1980) or World of Greyhawk boxed set (1983). A much shorter treatment than Living Greyhawk Gazeteer, these books are Gary Gygax's original World of Greyhawk in all its glory.

The City of GH box set appears on eBay regularly, you should be able to get a copy for $15-25 + shipping if you're patient.

You can also leverage the new City of GH map Denis Tetreault designed, which was published in Living Greyhawk Journal #2 (available on Paizo's site), or from his web site @ http://www.melkot.com/locations/cogh/cogh.html (along with the unpublished map of GH's sewers).

Many sources for City of Greyhawk.

1e World of Greyhawk Folio and boxed sets have a little info. 1e/2e Greyhawk adventures has some as well.

Pelor didn't show up until after these products.

2e City of Greyhawk Boxed Set, Falcon Trilogy of adventures both have stuff

Late 2e you get the Adventure begins, etc.

Not sure what the Living Greyhawk journal has on the city.

And there are EGG's Gord the Rogue novels some of which are set in Greyhawk.

The Living Greyhawk Gazetteer for 3E doesn't have any useful information on the geography/urban landscape and features of the Free City of Greyhawk itself. It has some helpful information on the general area, the resources and politics of GH, the city's history and stuff, and some details on its military, but nothing really helpful regarding the city's layout, outstanding features, or other notable things. It mentions that the city has a University of the Magical Arts, and the Grey College, but it doesn't really describe them.

I don't personally know much about it, so I can't offer anything helpful. Just the info that the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer wouldn't be any help to you in this particular regard. :heh:

I like the LGG, but it really is barebones in the description of many things (it's got a lot of regions, peoples, nations, deities, and such to cover, after all).
