Where does Van Ritchen come from? Is he a RL native or does he come from somewhere like 1890s Earth?

He's a native of Darkon, the realm of the "wizard-king" Azalin, but moved to Mordent when he revealed Azalin as a lich.

Both realms (or at least the portions where Rudolph lived) are more advanced than standard D&D - around the tech level of 1700-1800 Earth.

The VR books were written for 2E but since the majority of the information is fluff it is VERY easy to use for any edition. I still dig out my VR guide to Liches when creating a BBEG. Definitely one book you don't want to miss out on. The guide to vampires was very good too and I also liked the guide to werebeasts.
