Oh, now I do remember a second incidence, where the party was almost completely dead (altho, in the end, there was not a single casuality to be bemoaned).
2nd level party (Paladin, Wizard, Psychic Warrior and Fighter) were escorting two elves (Sage-type Commoner and his Cleric protectress (<- is that even a proper word?), also level 2 (the Commoner was level 3-4)) through a mountain range in the Silver Marches. During the night the guards saw one really large bat entering their field of vision and moving towards them roughly (not directly). In fear of the beast attacking them, they decided to strike first, which proved to be a rather bad idea, as there were 5 Dire Bats total (ok, that was a bit much, really, I slightly underestimated their nastiness
).
The party valiantly fought the beasts - bats and party members were falling quickly. The Cleric did her best to stabilize the ones, that were going down. In the end, there was only the Commoner (who had already picked up the Cleric's rapier a few rounds ago, while the Psychic Warrior was still fighting) and one damaged Bat standing and it evolved into a dramatic race of him hitting first on a rather high roll, or the Bat giving him the final blow with an average number, but the Commoner prevailed and saved the day!
