I just had a thought about a wizard who made critters with templates. He would have to be a Transmutation specialist and basically he would bestow different templates on different creatures.

"Today I will create a half earth elemental dire badger"

Tommorrow I will create a half dragon riding dog.

Tommorrow I will create a multiple headed winter wolf.

This would be way cool maybe even a temporary template based on the casters level. What do you guys think.

Consiter the idea stolen for my future campaign. I like it, though I'm afraid I don't have much to add, save praise. I don't know the magic system, and wouldn't know how to balance an idea (PRC?) like this.

Do you want this guy to be able to make permanent templates early on? late? never?

Do you care how long the temporary templates work?

If you give me some more background I could whip something up pretty quickly but then I like to just make things like that..lol..

for AD&D 2nd in an old dragon issue (it's based around wilderness) there's some new classes, fey-touched was one, and Merlin (Merlain, merlan, merlen, some derivation of the like) was another, the M one was a wizard who build odd creatures.

They detailed spells that would boost stats, add special abilities, or mix species together. It's probably just about what you're looking for (of course 2nd ed didn't have templates).

If I still had the issue I'd tell you the number or type up more info but the issue is in new york and i'm in south carolina I'll see if i can't investigate it online a bit.

EDIT: Issue 237, "Wild at Heart" article, Merlane is the class name. I found copies of the spells posted on the web, if it's not against the site's policy somehow I could post the 2nd edition spells if you are interested.

How about a PrC that let you add templates to your summoned monsters, on in fact summon them perminantly. Admitantly, having a bunch of these guys running around would be very digimon/pokemon esque, but... its cool if you keep it on the lowdown.
