Templates and HD

Howdy. A cleric's HD is d8. At level 5, he has 5d8 hit points. He then gains a template which has d12 HD. Does this mean the cleric's hp are recalculated for 5d12? If so, do you just add 5 * (d12 avg - d8 avg) hp to the total hp? In this case, it would be 10 hp.

Thanks.

Actually, remember the FIRST HD is always (for PC's) MAXIMUM.

And myself, I'd reroll the whole lot. Example: a 15th level cleric (HD = d8) becomes a Lich (HD changed to d12). The Cleric, in life, had a 14 Constitution; in unlife, she doesn't have a constitution score at all.

In life, the Cleric had rolled (max), 4,5,5,3,7,6,3,6,5,8,3,2,5,4,7; her total hitpoints are now (81(base) + 30(Con) =) 111.

Upon achieving unlife and Lich status, the cleric rerolls (max), 8,7,9,10,5,12,5,8,9,11,4; the total is now 100. Sucks to be the Cleric, I guess.

(and yes, Ipicked up the dice and rolled those).

In systems where you always get 1 more than half the potential maximum (that's how I do it, myself) ... each d8 after the first is worth 5, and each d12 after the first is worth 7. A 15thlevel d8-HD character would have (before constitution bonus) 120hp. The same character with a d12 hit die would have 152hp (obviously both my rolled sets above were a bit low, eh? :) ).
