He may be a barbarian, but that doesn't mean he can't be up to date with technology.

The only way I can possibly see you getting out of being dead at -11 is if you are running an Arcana Evolved campaign from Monte Cooke or you are a Frenzied Berserker with Deathless Frenzy.

But if he is using "Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords" there is a "stance" in the Devoted Mind discipline that lets him make a save, so that he ends up with 1 hp on the positive side instead of going into the negatives.
