Temporary Wis boost and bonus spells

Metallian

First Post
The player of a cleric in my group has a question that I'm not sure how to answer...

He found a spell in some reasonably official book or another that boosts Wis (basically a wis equivalent of "Bull's Strength" or "Cat's Grace"). I have no problem with this, but we're not sure how to handle spell preparation. If he casts the spell (which lasts for 6 hours) before preparing his spells for the day, does he get bonus spells for having a high Wis? If so, what happens when the Wis-boosting spell wears off?

I'd say he just loses the bonus spell, but he could always just use the bonus spell to cast a full-day duration spell. Is this balanced? It seems like using a second-level spell to get an extra spell (or more) per day would be a bit unbalanced, but then again he "saved" a 2nd level spell slot from the previous day in order to gain this benefit. Is there some precedent I can follow, like rules for a magic item that boosts wis (or int, for wizards)?

Thanks,

its called owls wisdom, in tome and blood, and no, it doesn't grant bonus spells, as stated in the discription

now go buy some wizzards books and support them

Try this on for size:

Whatever his wisdom score is when he starts to prepare his spells, that's the score he gets for preparing his spells for the day.

When his wisdom is reduced, he loses access to his highest level prepared spell - the precedent I am using the is what happens when you get a negative level.

I'm not sure that a better rule exists.

(edit: Unless, of course, the spell description from the spell he is using to boost his wisdom specifically excludes the gaining of additional spells from the additional wisdom.)

This question has sparked a lot of debate here...

According to the rules, buff spells like this can't give the spellcaster bonus spells for the day. Just a higher DC and better temp saves...

Generally I allow it for the purpose of gaining bonus spells but only if the duration of the spell is more than 12 hours.

As someone else has said, this is Owl's Wisdom from T&B. This is from the spell description and should answer your question.
Clerics, druids, paladins, and rangers who receive owl's wisdom do not gain extra spells, but the save DCs for their spells increase.

I do something similar to aggeman - but require that it last at least 24 hours, not 12

Magus_Jerel, please, would you mind spelling my name correctly, it's Aggemam. Thanks in advance.

Relics and Rituals has this type of spell that does allow for bonus spells to be used. However, it can only function for a person once a week.

Heh, that's funny...I actually have that book. I just haven't read it because I buy too many Wizards books and don't have time to read them all carefully. The guy didn't say what book it was in so I didn't think to look there. Well, if it says in the spell description "no bonus spells," that makes my life easier, though it does beggar the question "why did he ask me about it"? =)

Thanks to all who answered my silly question...
