Interesting. Several comments have implied the mechanics are really good- is there a 'core mechanic' like in d20 and White Wolf and stuff?

it is still based off of d20. three classes, fewer skills and one either has max ranks or no ranks in them, uses a reputation and class defense, uses toughness save from MnM instead of HPs, you get feats every level as they represent your class abilities. MAgic are gained with feats.

That's not what I learned in that thread; I think people are only bothered by agendas they don't agree with, in general, but would rather have an agenda-less game setting regardless.

And I don't know for sure how overt the agenda is in the books, but it sure is overt on the website and in the pre-production previews and such.

Or maybe my tolerance for it is lower, I don't know.

The mechanics are a fusion of d20 and Mutants and Masterminds. Three classes (for magic, skills and fighting) with various customizable 'paths', a magic/psionics fusion for the magic system - all based off feats and skills - and of course feats, skills, etc. Setting, rules, monsters, campaign advice, all in one book.

The 'agenda' that seems to get in some people's shorts is that, as is common in many fantasy novels both in and out of the genre, is that the main nation (The 'Kingdom of the Blue Rose' as Aldis is sometimes called) is a very peace-loving nation that is very inclusive of pretty much anyone save those born of Shadow. Human, non-human, gay, straight, man, woman, they all have equal standing and prestige with most people in Aldis. Some other countries around them are not so accepting and are either neutral or hostile to Aldis depending on the exact nature of the rivalry. Theocratic Jarzon is deeply suspicious of the Aldins use and acceptance of magic, though both nations fight against the Shadowkind and evil sorcery. Everyone fights the dark nation of Kern, the last stronghold of the ancient Sorcerer Kings that the other nations rebelled against centuries ago.

...but speaking of agendas... you want to read a series with nothing good to say about religion, organized or otherwise, read Herbert's Dune.

No, I've got nothing against Green Ronin, as I have no reason to believe that BR is some kind of real political manifesto for how they think society should really be. As far as I know, its just a setting meant to fit the molds of certain kinds of fantasy fiction, and a well-written setting as that, within the boundaries of what the genre allows.

It was just my first thought that it would be more entertaining to present a BR campaign as one where the setting as described in the manual is total propaganda by a totalitarian nanny-state that's turned political correctness into a dictatorship, then it would be to play it "straight". :p

Actually, I am determined to someday run an Isrador-oriented campaign of Midnight where the Orc conquerors are devoted servants of the one true god, who feel it is the Orcish Burden to bring religion and civilization to the "barbaric" lands of the human races.
The Orcs would also have british accents... in fact, in my previous Midnight campaign the Orcs were ALREADY that way, I just didn't think at the time of running the game from their point of view.
