Tempted to Run Blue Rose backwards

The absence of democracy doesn't automatically equate to slavery. We've lacked democracies for millenia, to only develop them relatively recently.

What you fail to sense is that in this setting the King is chosen by fiat of MAGIC DEER, not by democracy.
There is no outlet for civil dissent.. you can complain, I guess, if the thought police aren't out there to get you for being "shadow aligned"; but there isn't actually any vehicle for you to actually ACT on your dissent. You don't get to vote, you don't get to boycott, YOU MUST OBEY THE MAGIC DEER.

As such, the responsibility of all free men of good report being to oppose tyranny in all its manifestations, you have no choice but to try to assasinate the tyrant. Unfortunately, in this setting even that is taken away from you by divine fiat.
So basically, humans in this setting are either evil or they're the slaves of the MAGIC DEER.

Well, I actually agree with that form of government.

Except for the MAGIC DEER part.

I mean, if it were the giant psychic cats running the world, I could respect that. But not a MAGIC DEER.

Not in capital letters.

:D

I can only imagine your reaction to Narnia and Aslan.

"Who does this magic lion think he is, anyway? GOD ALMIGHTY?" :p

I'm quite willing to accept Narnia/Aslan as part of a children's fairytale.

I'm quite unwilling to accept Narnia/Aslan as a legitimate model of government.

And here we touch on another irony of the BR setting, the MAGIC DEER kingdom is no less a theocracy than Jarzon.

No where in the book does it say anything about being slaves. Please stop making things up.. And there is no thought police or secret police or anything close to that. There are ways to complain, there are many nobles in the governemnt and ifn fact anyone can become one. The purpose of the Golden Hart to to ensure the ruler is fair and just.

I understand that you and others don't like the setting, and that's fine. But please refrain from complaining about things that don't exist. It is great to get both sides of the arguements but only when both sides are actually talking about the same setting and the book it is in and not pulling things out of mid air.

So what? They are not enemies because they disagree with type of goverment, they are enemies because of the beliefs of the people.

Anyone attempting to harm either the Hart or the sovereign falls insensibly to the ground before harming either. The attacker does not awaken until after the coronation and is forever marked on the face with a gray hoof print. Anyone so marked is exiled from Aldis.

What, with no save?

And they call it justice!

Are you just being rhetorical here? Or do you really not see the deep flaw in your arguement?

The purpose of the Golden Hart is one thing and the capacity to impose it is another thing altogether. There is no need for the word "slave" to appear in the text for the functional implication of that status to be clear. And while "slave" may be a strong term for its own rhetorical purpose, not voluntarily submitting your actions to the moral code of the Golden Hart defines you as one of the setting bad guys.

And you can be fair and just and still be "evil" if your own ideas of fair and just are not in tune with the Golden Hart's. I'll take D&D alignment over that any day.

I can imagine a world where magic works.
I can imagine a world where a major kingdom claims that everyone opposed to them is evil.
I CAN'T imagine enjoying a world where everyone opposed to my political positions really is evil.

No, I'm pretty sure they call it protecting their ruler.

So you are saying that they DON'T call it justice?

Do all nations in this setting get to protect their rulers with this effectiveness? Or is there something more to this than simply protecting their ruler?
