Tensor's Floating Disk as Travel...

You get to direct its movement, if you dont it stays at a certain distance.

So sit on it and direct it in that direction over there.
No, you get to direct the interval of distance, not the movement of the disk. YOu can specify a distance. The disk will move to achieve that distance. It wil not move to achieve a specified direction. At least, that is how the spell is written.

This is of course where the arguement is, but it certainly seems like plain english to me.

SRD:
If not otherwise directed, it maintains a constant interval of 5 feet between itself and you

If not otherwise directed. I sit on it, I direct it to go over there. I am directing it otherwise.

Much like my car outside, it will sit in my parking spot unless I direct it otherwise. I get in, start it up, and direct it wherever I want to go. Same thing.

I see what you're getting at here, that you can't specify which direction the disk goes, but think of it this way. It accompanies you within the range of the spell. Nowhere does it say that it follows behind you. So theoretically, this spell, who's interval from you can be set from anywhere between (and including) 0' and 25' (+5'/2 levels), can't differentiate between whether it's in front of you or behind. All you can specify is how far it must stay from you. Nasty DM's could rule that when you get surprised while loading treasure, that when you direct the disk to get farther away from you, it actually goes toward the monsters, conveniently allowing them to loot you. ;)

That's where the Outboard Motor effect comes in :D
