I see no evidence that humanity is getting any better, only that it's capacity for destruction is increasing.

Yeah well this is an ongoing argument.

I mean the fact that most nations don’t have a 70-80% infant mortality rate barely rates as an improvement right?

The fact that most of us live in fairly free countries where the rule of law typically works isn’t even worth mentioning.

The fact that most of us will live healthy, productive lives free from even the slightest hint of starvation? Pshaw.

The fact that we don’t have open slave markets? Women actually have rights? You aren’t being burned at the stake for walking into the wrong church?

Obviously we have not improved at all.

A technical development, not a moral one, and one that accepts population growth and increases pressure on resources. On a personal level, a dead baby is a tragedy, but so far as the planet is concerned..,

What do mean by “free” and is giving more of it to idiots actually a good thing?

As healthy as you can afford to pay for. And productivity consumes resources faster than sitting around chewing leaves.
The fact that we don’t have open slave markets? Women actually have rights? You aren’t being burned at the stake for walking into the wrong church?
Plenty of people using their freedom to work very hard to reverse all those things. Still plenty of people killed for having the wrong religion; slavery is illegal, but there is still loads of it; the rights of women are still recovering from a sharp decline in the 18th and 19th centuries. These things are cyclical, not progressive.
Obviously we have not improved at all.
Humanity has not changed at all. Technology has made life easier, at the expense of draining the planet’s resources more quickly, thus accelerating extinction.

More philosophy in new one. Are the machines right lol.

I've often had the thought if aliens turned up or sentient machines and impartially judged us we we past muster? Or would they press that bi red button.

We're basically a threat to every other species around us just by existing.

I think we're just going to have to disagree here. But, to be fair, your take is precisely the take that they take in the show. The fact that in 1997, Japan had not had a single armed conflict in three generations and had see massive economic growth and growth in freedoms I guess means they are just doing worse than they were.

Who does even care whether the planet exists or that nature goes on?

it would be terrible if we destroyed it - to us. The planet, the sun, the universe, they'll move on, uncaring for anything. Whether we kill only off ourselves or all life on this planet - the only ones currently that wax poetic about the meaning of life, what is ethical conduct or what are moral actions are humans.

If you think that humans are irrelevant, than it really doesn't matter if we visit atrocities on each other, on animals, destroy nature or anything. Animals have no problems killing animals, murder babies, heck, even fungi can enslave some animals for their own purposes, and the "natural eliquibrium" Agent Smith is so fond of romanticizing is just some species taking from its environment until that environment can no longer sustain it and then it starves. The best thing evolution might do is, after million of years of mutation and selection, is for life to regulate itself a bit better to sustain for longer.
With our mental capabilities, the capability of social behaviour, we have found ways to regulate ourselves in far shorter time frames.
It takes time, there are setbacks, it's a never-ending struggle. But we are improving.

Meanwhile, human collaborationists are kickstarting terminator development
