I thought it was pretty easy. The constant roaring made me think of waterfall right away. Definitely keep the "beast" reference. Riddles use lots of metaphoric language. Removing it in favor of "place" would lose some of its poetic flavor.

I got it in about 30 seconds, and I've never been the type of guy who likes word games/riddles. So I think it is definitely easy enough for casual gamers. And even though some respondents say they were thrown off a bit, I think that a *group* of smart players sitting around a table with a chance to talk it over will definitely get it eventually. So, basically, I'm saying that this riddle is at about the perfect level of difficulty. (Good job making it up!)

At first I was thinking of
howling winds, or a windy chasm
but the destructive part made me guess
waterfall or a raging river
so, I got it right away. Good riddle.

Any idea which beast he's talking about? (and no, it's not a beast I made up).

I wouldn't have gotten it.
A waterfall isn't a beast.

You have to be very careful with riddles and puzzles. Even playtested puzzles have bombed in groups I've been in.

By this time, the riddle has morphed to:
"In order to find me again, you must face the beast that roars endlessly and devours the reckless mercilessly"

Unfortunately, my first thought was the ocean.

However, it should be alright if the players have a map, and the waterfall is marked on it.

That was my first guess as well.

I immediately thought of a volcano. I probably would have gotten waterfall right away if I knew there was one in that part of the country.

Using riddles requires knowing your group. Do they like puzzling over riddles for long periods of time? Then let them stew over it until they figure it out. Do they have ADD? Then provide alternate methods of finding the lair. Anything in between is a judgement call.

I got it on the first try after about 10-20 seconds; I tend to be pretty good with riddles. It sounds good and if nobody in a group of players can't figure it out with a map at hand then they don't deserve to find the dragon. ;)
