Testament: An Awesome D&D Supplement

I would just like to say that I like all of Green Ronin's Mythic Vistas book, but TESTAMENT (their "Biblical"/Ancient Middle Eastern sourcebook) is still my favorite. Even though I'm using a heavily modified version of the setting they present, I've been scattering my fantasy-ized pseudo-historical campaign with worshippers of Baal and Ishtar and all those other weird Canaanite, Egyptian and Sumerian deities, and it's fun, FUN, FUN! (Baal-worshipping goblins? Why not?)

I was wondering if anyone has run campaigns (or even just one-shots) using this book, and what plots you used, and how they went. I'm very interested in the setting.

I ran a short adventure, just to test the waters once the book came out, and had a blast. It is by far my favorite gaming book of last year (and this year so far) and the way I talk it up to people, you'd think I wrote it. :)

I focused on the Israelite angle pretty much exclusively when I ran it, and in pretty much all my subsequent ideas, but the book is full of great goodies for all cultures (love the Magus of the Starry Host).

(And just so there's a little plug as well...) Highmoon Media Productions will be releasing adventures for Testament under Green Ronin's new license very soon (the first one is already in editing and art has been contracted), so keep an eye out for info on that either on these boards, the front page, or www.highmoonmedia.com. Heck, if I had my wish, I would have a whole line of products in support of Testament!

Now, if we could only get it to be updated to 3.5. :)

Share your Testament stories. I'd love to hear them as well.

When I first saw Testament, I thought, you could play this as a straight, Conan-esque fantasy setting, and your players would never know it was Biblical.

Yes, Testament may truly be The Greatest Setting ever Published

sadly I only use bits and pieces, but would love to see some adventures for it, and to read what others have done with it

I really, really like the book... it's made even better by the fact that I took one of the best college courses of my education last semester on Ancient Jewish Civilization. I learned SO much *and* it inspired a thousand campaign ideas in my nerdy brain.

Interesting story about the book, I got it as a gift from my husband - but WalMart screwed up the shipping, and so I ended up with two copies. Anyone want the extra? ;)

At current, I have an excellent idea for an entire campaign using the setting that revolves around early Kabbalahist/Mystic theory... if I ever run it, it will be delicious.

I have had Testament since it came out; however, have not had a chance to run it until I begin my next campaign. It's actually going to be crossed over with the Wheel of Time sourcebook, with the players playing the people who left Randland to become the Seanchean.

By the way, are they ever going to reprint it without the black-on-dark-gray text? I scoffed at someone else's complaint about that, but when I went to read it myself, I did feel like it would make my eyes bleed.

Well, to be honest, I'm using a *heavily* polluted, D&D-ized version of the TESTAMENT setting, so I apologize in advance for tainting this thread which so far has been fairly serious. :/

My original intention was to run a TESTAMENT-EGYPTIAN ADVENTURES-AFRICAN ADVENTURES game (with a little TROJAN WAR thrown in, although that sourcebook isn't quite as good as the others). But obviously, EGYPTIAN ADVENTURES and AFRICAN ADVENTURES are much more "D&D-like" than TESTAMENT, since they have versions of all the "standard" D&D races. So I decided to create a setting which was a little bit between TESTAMENT and, say, AFRICAN ADVENTURES in its absurdity.

Basically, I'm setting the game in about 90 BC, and I've gone back in history and retroactively peppered it with fantasy-ish elements. And, most D&D-ish of all, kept a couple of nonhuman races: half-orcs (and AFRICAN ADVENTURES half-orcs), gnomes, goblinoids, and all the reptilians. I decided that I'd just play it as if half-orcs were just a race of humans (they can breed with humans, after all). For the other races, I decided that I'd just populate the parts of the world where civilization didn't exist yet (like all of Central Asia, Russia, northern Europe) with goblins and lizard men and giants and stuff, instead of humans. So instead of Vandals and Germans attacking Rome, they're orcish Vandals and Germans. And instead of Scythian raiders sweeping down from the Turkey region, they're hobgoblin Scythian raiders. Etc. etc. So that's my ridiculously absurd compromise. ;)

Actually, I think the MOST important element in making it a "realistic" game, so far, has been eliminating alignments. Once everyone behaves purely based on a combination of personal ethics, personal selfishness and nationalism, real "historical" behavior becomes much more possible, and I don't have to wonder about what alignment Baal-worshippers would be....

Sure - I'll take your extra copy off your hands! :) Sounds like a cool book.
