Thanks for the "low level spell" advice

The combat encounter was last night and it was a great, epic struggle for the PCs - one PC died, but was luckily in range to be Revivified before his soul departed his body; another PC dropped to -9, but stabilized thanks to his Die Hard ability. One long-running major NPC ally was killed when the Goristro dropped him to -28 with a massive blow - unfortunately, he was not in range to be Revivified.

The party cleric was dropped to single digits in hit points twice, and both the psion and sorcerer were banged up as well.

Things looked pretty dicey for the party when the blackguard's Blasphemy dazed all four of the frontline fighters, and the blackguard's mage minion managed to zap the party's goliath barbarian with Ray of Enfeeblement followed by Ray of Clumsiness. The Clumsiness ray dropped her 8 Dex to the minimum of 1. The minion did miss the elf paladin with his first ray attack, though, and was never in position to cast his Stinking Cloud.

However, the party ended up pulling it out in the end - they finally did enough damage to the Goristro to take it down, and the psion rolled a Crit on one of his Ranged Touch attacks and did an insane amount of damage on the Blackguard.

So, thanks to the folks who gave me all the good advice - it was a fun battle for me to DM, though it did take a good four hours to complete (7 PCs, 1 NPC ally vs 3 major bad guys, 3 major minions and about 10 minor minions...)

Some of the best, most epic and fun battles will end up taking an entire session or more. That's what "to be continued next week" is for. :)

Glad it worked out. Didn't realize you were using a Gorristro, I always thought those were a little ridiculous and over the top. Then again, half the stuff in that demon book seems like that to me.

What other low level spells got used? List them, we want to know!

Just kidding, one of my suggestions (ray of clumsiness) was used, I'm happy.

The goristro was super powerful, but they only get 2 attacks per round at +29 each... and, the darn beast kept failing its DC:22 or DC:24 Reflex Saves even though it had like a +13 or +14 Reflex save. (I'm famous for my bad rolling as a DM - early in the campaign, 15 charging orcs got caught in an Entangle spell. I needed to roll a 14 to save, and a 13 for the leader. The leader and one other saved - the other 13 were Entangled. )

The second level Ray spell missed, but I forgot which one it was... Ray of Clumsiness and Enfeeblement were the two that hit. He did cast Lightning Bolt as a 3rd level spell and hit the cleric & sorcerer, but both of them saved for half damage.

Well, I think the party's goliath barbarian may invest in some protections that will increase both her regular AC and touch AC.

I had a player fairly recently who was dominated, and decided to start looking into ways to improve their will save right away. Funny how that all works out in the end. :)

Do you allow Complete Mage? If he took a rank in Knowledge: Arcana, he could take the variant Spell Sense. It replaces Trap Sense, instead adding that bonus to touch AC against spells and spell-like abilities (but only to AC; not say...to reflex saves against magic traps). Might be worthwhile for him, even if it's a cross-class skill. :)
