When it comes to safety, I've owned 3 Volvos (a 240DL, S70, and S60) and never been let down. I don't own one presently, but that's only because none were available from my Mom's cousin (a used car salesman)- instead, he was able to hook me up with a used loaded 2008 Honda Accord with only 3000 miles on it for a stupidiculous price.
I was once a middle car in a multiple car hit & run chain reaction accident on I-35 in Dallas. As I was slowing down because of traffic, my S70 was hit from behind, knocked airborne (nose-up flying wheelie style), landed in a taxi's trunk, and accordioned.
In the car's cabin, however, the only visible damage was a rear seat speaker that popped out of its well, and my passenger and I walked away shocked but unscathed.
According to USAA, there were only a couple of other cars in its class on the market at the time that would have come through (my portion of) the accident I had with as little passenger injury- I recall one of the others was the Nissan Maxima.
