From what I've seen where I live, 3.5e is not experiencing a renaissance--people never stopped playing it. They took a look at 4e and stated that they will not be playing it.
I'm currently running a 4e game, but half of my players long for 3.5e. I like DMing 4e, although it is a little tiresome keeping track of conditions in a combat--marks, etc. And I just can't get my mind around small creatures having a lot of hp, like a dire rat having 38hp (MM 219). I've found that unless I use minions, combats do grind--like they did at high levels in 3.5e.
I've found myself longing to run a standard 3.5e game again. I'm familiar with that system. 4e has a learning curve that I'm not certain if I want to invest a lot of time into learning. I used to be a strong proponent for 4e. Now, after running a campaign for about 3 months, I'm not so certain.
I also figure that WotC, in a couple years, will go ahead and release 4.5e or 5e--and I really don't want to fall for that again. So I've only bought 2 books beyond the core: Adventurers Vault (which was a disappointment) and Open Grave (which was okay). Given the mediocre quality of these book, I will not be buying anymore.
I think the biggest competitor to 4e is 3.5e. Whether or not 3.5e is undergoing a renaissance elsewhere, I cannot say for certain.
