BILLIONS OF BLUE BLISTERING BARNACLES! What a great movie! Totally captures the spirit of Herge's books while giving it a jolt of adrenaline for good measure. So let me count the ways why I enjoy this film so much:
WARNING! SPOILERS BE AHEAD!!!
LIKES
Steven Spielberg - Let me just state it out loud, I was underwhelmed by the last Indy film. But it seems like Spielberg took everything that could have been great in that flick and crammed it here in one exciting package. He directs the film with such a breathless pace, but not enough to overload your brain like a Michael Bay film. I read somewhere that before he died Herge considered Spielberg the only director who can do Tintin justice on the big screen. Well... I guess he was right.
Action setpieces galore - The film has a number of action setpieces that will make your jaw drop from their incredible execution and marveling at just how much planning Spielberg and company put into them. The flashback scenes of Sir Francis Haddock's daring defense of his ship against Red Rackham's pirates will have you wondering why Pirates of the Carribbean was never this cool.
Captain Haddock - Let's be honest, Tintin is a good lead character, but he's bland as can be. The real attraction of Herge's stories are the various quirky characters he interacts with, the most prominent being his good friend Captain Archibald Haddock. This is the drunken old reprobate we all know and love from the books, and Andy Serkis portrays him to perfection. Being that he's still a miserable drunken wretch here he provides a lot of the comedy in the film, but when things are in a pinch you can count on him to have your back. Fans of the comic are sure to be pleased.
A great villain - Sakharine was a wonderful antagonist for this film. Daniel Craig was great.
Easter Eggs - There's a bunch of stuff in the film that references the other Tintin stories. However, my fave bit are the cameos of two characters within the film. One is longtime Tintin castmember who actually plays some part in the plot. The other, well... let's just say Spielberg already pays tribute in the very first minutes of the film.
Animation - Notice I didn't say much about the animation. That's because it's that good. The dreaded uncanny valley didn't pop it's head up while I was watching. Nice job Weta.
DISLIKES
No Calculus - It's too bad the old goa-er, I mean deaf professor couldn't make an appearance here. I know he only pops up in Red Rackham's Treasure, but I doubt Spielberg and Peter Jackson will be adapting that for the next film. They've pretty much finished the treasure hunting arc with this film. Here's hoping he pops up in the next one.
So like I said. Great film. And may I just say, while I enjoyed Thor and Captain America this year, this is by far the best comic book adaption of 2011. Hell, I think this could be the greatest comic book film of all time.
