Weapon and Armor Proficiency: All simple weapons, all light armor, but no shields.

Spellcasting: The Adventuring Scholar learns a small number of Arcane spells as she goes up in level. The Scholar has a caster level equal to one-half her class level. The list of spells she may choose from is below. The Adventuring Scholar casts as a Wizard, gaining bonus spells from having a high Intelligence and recording her spells in a spellbook.

Versatility(Ex): Scholars study a wide variety of skills, and no two are alike. At first level, a Scholar chooses two Exclusive skills. These become in-class skills for the Scholar.

Knowledgeable(Ex): Scholars, above all else, value knowledge, and horde it like none other. Each level, the Scholar gains a pool of skill points equal to her Intelligence modifier that may only be spent on Knowledge skills or new languages. In addition, the Scholar collects lore much the same way a Loremaster does, and may roll Lore in precisely the same manner. Levels of Adventuring Scholar stack with levels of Bard, Loremaster, or any class with a similar ability for the purposes of determining the level of that ability.

Scholar Ability(Varies):At 1st level and every 6th level thereafter (7th, 13th, and 19th), the Scholar gains one special ability selected from the following list:

*Skill Mastery(Ex): The Scholar gains Skill Mastery as per the Rogue’s special ability.

*Discern Magic(Sp): The Scholar gains the ability to cast Detect Magic from any magic type at will.

*Reveal Magic(Sp): The Scholar gains the ability to cast Analyze Dweomer and Legend Lore once per day per four class levels each. This ability cannot be selected until Adventuring Scholar level 8 or higher. Although these abilities are spell-like, they retain the casting times of the original spells, though they do not retain the original spells' components.

*Superior Learner(Ex): The Scholar gains an additional +2 skill points per level starting at the level this ability is selected and continuing for every Scholar level he gains.

*Will to Live(Su): Once per day plus an additional once per day per four levels, the Scholar may use her Will saving throw to resist an effect that normally requires a Fortitude or Reflex saving throw.

*Communicative Insight(Sp): The Scholar gains the ability to cast Speak with Anything once per day with a duration of one hour.

*Magical Insight(Ex): The Scholar gains one metamagic or item creation feat for which she meets the prerequisites.

*Combat Insight(Ex): The Scholar gains a feat from the Fighter list that she meets the prerequisites of.

Area of Study(Ex): At 2nd level and every 3rd level thereafter, the Scholar decides on a specific area of expertise to focus on. From their focus, they gain one ability selected from the following list:

*Student of Combat: The Scholar gains a +1 insight bonus to attack rolls. This ability can be selected multiple times and stacks with itself.

*Student of Magic: The Scholar gains an effective Scholar caster level. This caster level applies to all level-dependent effects of her spells, but does not result in acquisition of spells or spell slots per day. In addition, the Scholar gains a +1 insight bonus to her spell’s DCs. This ability can be selected multiple times and stacks with itself.

*Student of Interaction: The Scholar gains a +1 insight bonus on Charisma-based skill checks and Sense Motive checks. This ability can be selected multiple times and stacks with itself

*Student of Self-Defense: The Scholar gains a +1 insight bonus to AC. This ability can be selected multiple times and stacks with itself.

*Student of Lore: The Scholar gains a +1 insight bonus on Intelligence-based skill checks. This ability can be selected multiple times and stacks with itself.

*Student of Arcana: The Scholar may select a number of Arcane spells whose combined spell levels are equal to or less than her Scholar level times three. No one of the spells chosen can have a spell level greater than the Scholar’s class level divided by two. The Scholar gains the ability to cast these spells. In addition, the Scholar gains an additional spell slot one level higher than the highest level spell slot he currently has. This ability can be taken multiple times.

*Student of Exploration: The Scholar gains the Traps class feature as per the Rogue, and a +1 insight bonus on Listen, Search, and Spot checks. This ability can be selected multiple times, and stacks with itself.

*Student of Restricted Secrets: The Scholar may select two additional Exclusive skills to become in-class skills.

*Student of War: The Scholar gains the Martial Weapon Proficiency feat with a single martial weapon of his choice, or gains an Armor or Shield Proficiency feat for which he meets the prerequisites.

*Student of Kinesthetics: The Scholar gains a +1 insight bonus on all Strengh- and Dexterity-based skill checks. This ability can be selected multiple times and stacks with itself.

Signature Skill(Ex):At 10th level and again at 20th level, the Scholar gains an uncanny knack for the use of a single skill of her choice. Any time she makes a skill check using one of her signature skills, she rolls three d20s, and selects which die she wishes to apply to her skill check.

Spell List: Scholars select their spells from the following list:

1st: Alarm, Comprehend Languages, Cure Light Wounds, Daylight, Detect Arcane Magic, Detect Secret Doors, Expeditious Retreat, Identify, Lesser Elemental Orb, Levitate, Locate Object, Mage Armor, Magic Missile, Minor Creation, Object Reading, Sleep, Tenser’s Floating Disk, Unseen Servant.

2nd: Arcane Lock, Clairaudience/Clairvoyance, Continual Flame, Cure Moderate Wounds, Detect Other Magics, Dispel Arcane Magic, Gaseous Form, Hold Person, Invisibility, Knock, Leomund’s Tiny Hut, Locate Creature, Melf’s Acid Arrow, Minor Image, Nondetection, Resist Elements, Sensitivity to Psychic Impressions, Shatter, Speak with Animals, Tongues.

Versatility: 2 exclusive skills is pretty powerful. How about just 'choose two non-exclusive skills, they are now class skills.'

Given the flavor on this class, I would expect a skill list to look something like... (and with two exclusive skills out of three anyway, and off the top of my head)

Appraise, Balance, Climb, Craft, Decipher Script, Diplomacy, Forgery, Handle Animal, Heal, Intuit Direction, Jump, Knowledge, Listen, Speak/Read Language, Use Magic Device, Use Rope, and Swim.

Common Versatility Skills: Move Silently, Hide, Disable Device, Open Locks, Intimidate, Tumble, Wilderness Lore, Spot, Sense Motive, etc

Thus, what all will share is an ability to analyze objects, be they books or vases, and find the value, history, decipher odd markings, and attempt to utilize any special powers they might have.

Additionally, they will all have an ability to move around effectively in the crazy tombs and the like they visit, having the necessary skills to climb the ropes, keep balance on a precipace, and swim across odd moats. What they lack is an ability to be stealthy, disable all traps and problems in the dungeons, be the perfect negotiator, identify all threats, and so on. This way they have a solid niche, without overcoming the particular skills and specialties of rogues, rangers, and bards.

I also suggest tightening up the abilities list. There are a whole lot that are very similar between and within the Scholar Ability and Area of Study.

Finally, giving out skill points as a class ability is pretty messy. Better yet, just say something like... "You get a +2 bonus to all Intelligence-based skill checks" or "You gain a +2 bonus to any Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma-based skill of your choice."

Well, time to return to bed. Cool idea here.

It seems a little heavy for me. First consider the class that is most similar... the rogue (or bard, but I will go with rogue here). You have equal skill points, higher HD, equal BAB, and only one good save like the rogue. Youe replace sneak attack and rogue abilities like evasion, uncanny dodge, high level rogue skills, etc. with limited spellcasting and lots of cool minor abilities. It seems that the niche you are trying to fill is that of the non-sneak attacking rogue, or the non-musical bard.

I agree with Khorod's skill list and revision to the Versatility skill.

I think that the Knowledgable ability should be delayed a level or two, and should be limited to just the Lore section.

The Area of Study abilities, although of decent flavor value could probably be combined with Scholar Abilites.

The signature skill is a cool ability.

How about this progression with a d6 and same spells.

1. Versatility, Area of Study
2. Knowledgable
3. Area of Study
4-20. Area of Study at odd levels, Signature Skill at 10 and 20

With the Scholar Abilities added into the Areas of Study, this is one less of the combined abilities than your progression. This class will be good at everything, but excel at nothing, the concept behind the bard, but without music, and a slightly reduced spellcasting prog. I think that the HD needs to be reduced because both of the similar classes have d6's and this class steals a little from both niches; the rogue's skillfulness, and the bard's jack-of-all-tradiness.

I think it is a great idea and I thank you for making me think about it.

Have you seen the Adventuring Scholar Prestige class in Asgard Magazine?

It seems to be what you're looking for. Someone can qualify for it at 3rd level, and it's a pretty good class.

If I wanted to make a 20 level scholar class, I think I would start there and add a few more abilities to round it out another 10 levels.

That should give you some more ideas to capture the flavor of what you are looking for.

P.S. I forgot to mention that you can download Asgard magazine for free off the main ENWorld page.

I agree with all of handforged's suggestions.

In addition, I would probably try to spread out the abilities a bit more (although they are already fairly well distributed) -- remove the clumping around levels 1 and 20 and you'd have fewer ability-less levels. (If you decide not to implement handforged's suggestions, the first level is currently pretty front-loaded.)

This is a very cool class, and a good take on a classic archetype. Nice work!

Well, the ability clumping is because I deliberately arranged everything in the class to happen at a level that the character didn't get a feat or a stat-up. Only levels 8 and 20 overlap in that regard.

As to the frontloadedness, I know, and it's something I'm working on resolving.

Thanks for all of your commentary!
