The Agony of No-shows

I expect some commitment from my players. Stuff comes up, I understand. But, unless you're missing body parts, you need to give a call. Period.

I'd rather not play than play with people who can't be bothered to show. Gaming is an ongoing event. If you can't make an ongoing commitment, it destroys the game (at least the parts I like). You have the rest of the group to think about, not just your own moods. If you might screw over the rest of the players one night because you "just don't feel like showing", then let me know now.

Of course, I'm very up front about that, so I don't usually have much trouble.

I'm with most other people here. My e-mails to players who do this read, "Sorry to see you've quit the campaign. You'll be missed." It's a lie but I'm big on social niceties.
 

We're all friends so we're all good for letting others know if we're either gonna have to back out or be late. I'm usually the one being late for the Saturday games as I have to work most, if not every, Saturday. They all know that. :) And I've only had to bow out of two games the whole time. The first was probably work or family-related. The second was when I was supposed to take another friend (who doesn't game with us as he's too far away and noone's gamed with him, except for me at a con) home after bringing him up to see the SW movie on opening night. Ended up someone else taking him home after I'd already bowed out of the game. Only called the evening of the game, after I'd recuped from the lack of sleep, to see if it was being held at all (it wasn't-I was the "lynchpin" player as there were others who were out due to being on vacation). But we all have various methods of communicating- primarily email as it's the quickest and easiest.
