The Berbalang wasn't just something silly that was made up - they were a real world mythological creature.

Not that real-world mythology prevented silliness... after all, it gave us the Bonacon

He didn't say they were bringing them back. He stated they would be referenced in the podcast. Maybe the reference is "the algoid and berbalang were dumb monsters, and you won't see any of that" (more than likely it's a bit more specific).

My first 2e campaign began with a 1st level Dungeon adventure featuring a berbalang. It worked out pretty well and I like the critter.
