The Amazing Screw-On Head

I'm a bit surprised that no one here has mentioned Sci-Fi's new animated pilot, The Amazing Screw-On Head, based on the Mike Mignola (Hellboy) comic. Sci-Fi describes it as a "hilarious send-up of Lovecraftian horror and steampunk adventure" -- but you can judge for yourself by watching the pilot on-line, or on Sci-Fi on Thursday night.

OK, I'm surprised it has only been mentioned briefly.

Anyway, I was impressed, and it seems like the kind of show the EN World would eat up -- Lovecraftian horror plus zany hijinks.

Unfortunately, I watched it. It was significantly less than impressive.

Why do you say that? I certainly found it a bit odd, but I thought it was interesting and very well done. The voice acting was excellent, and the look was very true to Mike Mignola's style too.

So I just watched my DVRed copy off cable, and it definitely benefited from the higher-quality audio and video; I caught all sorts of little things I didn't catch on-line. Also, that points to another thing I liked about the show: it has enough going on that it gets more interesting with reviewing, not less.

I loved it, but is this a new series or just a one shot? I DVRed it this week, but it's the same episode as last week.

SciFi is so confusing lately...
