Well, for the past winners "the job" consisted of doing a lot of PR appearances, gladhandling with investors and executives, and getting the heck out of the way when the time came to actually make decisions or close sales so Trump's real employees could do their thing. Maybe it'll be different this time since Trump got involved in the selection process a lot earlier, but interviews with past apprentices made it pretty clear that the point of the show has always been to glorify Trump, not to find talent.
So far as Randal's decision goes, IMHO the big problem was that Trump sprang it on him out of the blue. Instead of taking them both aside before the show and saying "look, I'm hiring you both, I'll declare a winner but I want the winner to recommend the other person gets a job too", he just assumed Randall would go along with it. Trump's the bad guy here.
And nobody worry too much about Rebecca - Yahoo! hired her. OTOH, when a talk show host asked Trump and Randal when Randal would start working, Trump said "Today" at the same time as Randall said "We're going to start negotiations soon." Clearly they deserve each other.
