The Best and Worst Rules of D&D

Worst: Toughness feat. There are so many ways to make this feat a viable and useful, but not overpowered, choice, and they didn't do any of them.
PrCs: I would prefer more options for the core classes instead. As it is, if you have a niche character concept that the core classes don't quite fit, you have to take a special PrC.

Best: Races, templates, class levels, and all the fun ways they combine.

Worst: Grapple, high levels (nothing against play, just against balance).
Best: saving throws. Anyone who played 2e knows how odd those were.

Best: Spontaneous casting of Cure spells by clerics. Making clerics fun and desirable to play has had a bigger impact on the dynamics of my games than just about anything else. It's a rules change that has positive ramifications for the role-playing aspect of the game.

Runners-up: Damage resistance, metamagic, the new armor rules (ASF, Dex bonus, etc), named bonuses and stacking

Worst: Half-X templates for PCs. A munchkin's dream, and something that annoys me no end. I'll accept half-elves due to long exposure to the concept, and even grudgingly live with half-orcs, but this half-solar/half-dragon 12th level monk stuff just has to end.

Runners-up: Magic items/spells that boost mental stats, spiked chains, no facing in combat

BEST

- Streamlined mechanics (1d20 + a bunch of numbers)
- Monsters with ability scores and other PC stuff
- Skill system
- Vancian magic system
- Multiclass rules (much easier now than in 1e/2e)

WORST

- Rapid advancement rate
- Overabundance of magic (and ease of crafting magic items)
- Pokemount
- Monsters as player characters (humanoids, monstrous humanoids ok; the rest, no)
- ECL, CR
- AoO
- epic level rules
Grazzt, I wanna play in your games! :))

I've said it before - use the spell as written in the 3E PHB, and the problems go way :)

We house ruled it properly IMC. That doesn't change the fact that as per the core rules, it sucks.

Damn... what were they thinking ?

The obvious answer is, of course, they were not...

Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with it?
