Well, I made my vote for "Best Overall" but there are so many different ways to rate them.

Best Graphics is FFX, hands down - no surprise there.

Best Gameplay (Combat) is FFX again, at least for me. The ability to swap equipment and characters in combat and the ability to actually control summoned creatures are the best things that Square has done in a long time.

Best Gameplay (Character Advancement) would be FFV for the complete customizability that you have over your characters. I hated FF7's Materia system, aka "my characters don't get better but these dumb rocks do". That concept just kind of bugged me.

Best Plot - I've got to go with 6 on this, but keep in mind that I've only extensively played 6-10. (7, 8, and 10 are all pretty much the same plot...)

Best Characters - That's a tough one. 7 and 8 are out, since Cloud and Squall annoyed the hell out of me (although FF7 has the coolest Cid). I don't have any strong memories of 9, so it's between 6 and 10 for me. I'll go with 6, I think the characters there are more memorable than the ones from 10.

I find I must assertain the intelligence level on these boards. I have a postulate that the average IQ of the people here is directly proportional to the number of people who don't vote for Final Fantasy VI.

Feh! I can't speak for 9-10, and FFT (as I never picked them up), but will state uniquivocally that VI was the best of everything that went before. And I have a measured IQ of 150*. There's a data point for you! Nyah!

* - Of course, I am also one of those people who beleives IQ is more indicitive of your testtaking ability, but there you go!

My vote goes to FF7. It had great characters, nice twist in the story (Aeris' death, possibly the saddest moment in computergaming history), a faceless enemy (The ShinRa Corp) and the biggest badass EVER seen in a computergame (Sephiroth. That dude RULEZ!!!), that you almost feel sorry for.

Not far behind is FF6 and 9. They are really good, but overall FF7 beats them...

Can't say anything 'bout FFX, since it hasn't been released over here yet. But it does look promising.

BTW. FF: The Spirits Within wasn't that bad. It wasn't the best movie ever, but still far from the worst...

It was an OK movie, but as Final Fantasy it sucked . If it didn't have the FF name attached to it I think that die-hard FFers would have received it a bit better, but as it was, it had nothing to do with any of the games, and it didn't even have the stuff that carries over from game to game. Not a chocobo in sight, dammit!

FF Tactics, although FF7 is good too. I liked FF9 alot, but the plot isn't as good as FF7's plot. Despite their worse graphics, all the pre-PSX games were very good.

The only thing thats really important is that FF8 really sucks. We should start another poll for worst FF game, so that everyone can vote it down. Die Squall, Die Selphi, Die Irvine. The rest of you can live, but that still doesn't mean I like you.

But Rinoa is arguably the hottest FF heroine! :)

There ARE chocobos in FF:TSW. Here is quote from FF guru Hironobu Sakaguchi:

"You can see me [Sakaguchi] for a split second where the entire council is gathered, and Dr. Cid and Aki are discussing the Gaia Theory. I am actually one of the council members. The Chocobo appears in a couple of places. The first is when Aki wakes up from her dream in the morning and rushes off to this council meeting, and you notice that she is wearing a white tee-shirt. If you look carefully, there is a sewn on Chocobo on her shirt. I think the other is during the panic when people are running around on top of a building, and the escape wall comes crashing down. In that particular scene is one man standing in the middle of the screen holding a briefcase. When he runs off, you can notice a little Chocobo on his briefcase."

So it has some FF elements...

BTW. I just found out that Square are finally releasing FF6 for the PSX in Europe. About phreakin' time, I'd say... Now if they just would hurry up and get FFX out the door...

I voted for 6, but I've only played 1,4,6,7, and 10 extensively. Seriously considered voting for X, but I'm not quite done with it yet (I should be able to finish it after work today).

I have yet to see a RPG beat 6. Some come close, but overall it is the epitome of video game RPG at least to me.

Kefka is the best villain. His quotes are great for villians in D&D games.

Also the plethora of characters. Of course I am biast as you can tell from my avatar.

I love playing the sit down version from the Returners and can't wait for 3rd ed of that.

FF Movie: The 'Suck' Theory

Momentarily throwing aside the "Was it really a Final Fantasy movie?" argument, here's how I appraised the Final Fantasy movie:

Had the movie been produced with real actors and sets and top notch special effects, would it have sucked?

I say, yes, it would have definitely sucked. The fact that the entire movie is near lifelike CG animation does not save it from its inherent suckiness. Whether a movie is composed of CGI, old school stop-and-go animation, nitty gritty unedited film, or a mixture of all three, suck is still suck. And that's what it does. Suck.

I do give the animators much applause on a technical level... in terms of raw visuals, the movie is incredible (apart from the lack of facial emotion and expressiveness). But great computer animation can't save the movie, let alone make the movie.

It's unfortunate, as I had been really looking forward to Final Fantasy in the theaters. Needless to say, after the initial short-lived appreciation of the CG imagery wore off, I was very underwhelmed.
