poor old thread, having been perfectly civil before, didn't need to see the light of day again anyway. ;)

LondonReign, your comment was inappropriate and seemed only designed to cause problems/start a flamewar/get this thread closed. As a result I've deleted your words and those places where others had quoted it.

I notice that you joined in August 2002, although you have only made 73 posts since then. I suggest that you check up on board etiquette and rules as it appears that you have become rusty.

Actually, if you think about it the cleric class in DnD is based offa the Bible. I mean, lookit the spell lists. Sticks to snakes, the various cure spells etc.

On a more serious note, I do use angel/demon names for various aasimar characters/half celestials I've created over the years.

I have considered running a monotheism camapign sort of like Narnia. There is a supreme deity that may or may not be the Hebrew/Christian God. All the Demon Lords grant knowledge of magic and demonology. Focusing mainly on Orcus as a fallen angel. Each priest of the supreme deity chooses their domains as their god is the god of all. Alignment cannot be of the Good type, but heros strive to do the right thing.

In this world I was thinking of using the Psalms and Proverbs, the prophecies of Isaiah, and other texts that could be carried out without them being from this world. The parables from the new testament would be great for this. I am even thinking of using the story of Jesus as somthing that happened long long ago and worlds away, yet the story made it to this world.

I think that would be fun. That way I could use the historical accounts from the bible in my campaign world.

Aaron.

I actually just used it this week in a story I wrote based on a fiend that originally showed up in 'Hellbound: The Blood War', and made several notable appearances in my Planescape campaign, Daru Ib Shamiq.

Of course, I probably earned myself some time in purgatory for having Daru quote John the Baptist, and having some seriously blasphemous parallels between Daru and said new testament prophet.

But outside of that... names, names and more names. Anytime I need a name with a semetic or arab basis, it's probably the first source I can think of just to mind for obscure names.

And even outside of that, using the Bible as literature, there's tons of myth archetypes and parallels to use for campaign plots if you wanted. Same thing with non talmudic jewish folklore, christian apocrypha, non canonical pseudoepigraphia etc

Greetings!

For those of you who have been inspired thusly, what details have you used, and what elements have inspired you in the game?

Please allow me to mention a couple of good sources:

I have used the heck out of Asimov's Guide to the BIble, which is still a common find in the Barnes & Noble discount shelves, because it explains many of the secular/historical references in the Bible, and gives as much stuff to steal as the Bible itself.

While the best online Bible search engine that I have found is at http://www.biblegateway.com/, it is limited to containing a great number of Protestant versions of the Bible. The advantage to the Catholic Bible is that it contains a bit more material, the Deuterocanonical books, which have a lot to recommend them for the purposes of this thread. This includes the books of I & II Maccabees, Judith, Tobit (all narrative in structure) and the 13th and 14th chapters of Daniel, containing the oldest mystery short stories recorded. These are available at:

Hmm, I tend to rely more on Herodotus for this sort of thing.

But Testament was an awesome game-supplement.

Were I to play in it or something inspired from it it would probably be the pre-Saul judges period.

Weird that I never thought to use it for game inspiration or plot rip-offs.
