The Campaign Setting Books

It won't be easy for me though...looking at the Githzerai and Minotaur didn't exactly wow me, and those are 2 of my favorite "monster" races to play.
I personally think the Gith's racial package is really strong. But even so, why do you need to be "wowed" by their stats in order to play your favorite race?

Lets just say this...like many of the 4Ed versions of races I liked to play in earlier editions, they don't have the same flavor to me, at least in part due to 4Ed's design decision of serving balance first. They don't fit with my internal concept of what they should be.

As an example, starting Dragonborn or Minotaurs are no stronger than an Orc- something that simply leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I understand why it was done, but I don't agree that it should have been. Githzerai, preternaturally dexterous in previous editions, are toned down to match other dexterous races from the PHB.

And lets leave it at that.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

I decided that, for the good of the group, my best bang-for-the-buck option at this point was to pick up PHB2 & 3, with a continuing eye towards picking up Dark Sun when it is released.

I figure that those 2 additional books should give us a decent breadth of choices, if not the full depth of options gained by having the Powers books. I don't think I'll pick up the campaign books unless/until they go on sale in a used book store somewhere (or some other form of deep discount)- I'd love to have access to those races, but there doesn't seem to be much else in them for me.
