Pretty good review.

I've yet to force my way through the first few chapters of the Silmarillian, so I hope this isn't too close to that style.

The Tale of Turin Turambar was one of my favorite passages (besides The Lay of Beren and Luthien) in the Silmarillion, so it'll be interesting to read the tale in full detail in this book. Twas such a sad and haunting piece of tragedy, and definitely not for those looking for the sudden joyful turn (or eucatastrophe) found in The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings. :(

Great review BTW, I also read a review from the Times Online which the reviewer also praised the book despite not being a fan of LOTR or of Tolkien's writing in general. You can find it here.

It actually gets much better after the first few chapters. :)

That's what I've been told. I have an obsession with starting a book from the beginning, but I may just need to suck it up and skip the first few chapters, and then if I like it I can return to them later.

Thanks for sharing the reviews. I just started reading the Children of Hurin and I'm enjoying it as much as I did The Silmarillion when I read it back in the sixth grade :)

Was that in-between studying for the PSAT and taking AP Chemistry?

Move to the head of the class Mr. Khan!

Nice review.

And how did I miss that it's illustrated by Alan Lee?! I was waffling over whether to buy the hardcover or wait for the paperback release. That made up my mind.

Now I just have to wait for next payday... :(
