The choice to be raised from the dead

Also in planescape, which used to be cannon, when you die you become a petitioner on the plane that most closely matches your alignment. All well and good, but You lose all memories of your former life and begin a new one on the plane. Even if your wife from the prime came to visit you on Mt Celestia you wouldnt recognize her , you may feel some connection to her but you wouldnt know how. So IMC unless you provide a very good reason that appeals to the core of a person , not just their memories , they will not return. For example: If an adventurer died in the middle of a quest to make his name and his friends wanted to raise him they would have to bribe him with something other than his vanity, because he isnt gonna remember why he wanted to make his name. Now if he were lawful good and they convinced him that he was the only one who could save some innocent lives, then it may be a different story.

Had an adventure based arond that once. A petioner was the last Dwarven King to posses a sacred relic. He had died.

We the heroes had to go find him, then convince him to help hunt down his memories (in the Astral of of course) to give us clues about the whereabouts of said sacred relic. A very cool campiagn.

The only 'story' I've ever seen that dealt with the whole came back from the dead and was in 'heaven' was Buffy (that I remember). I really digged that season for that reason alone.

I think it comes down to what the person wanted in life. I played a game once where the druid of our party was very strict with how he wanted to be brought back. He believed in the whole "circle of life" thing, so he wanted to be reincarnated, and not resurrected. So he got his wish and came back as a centaur. But its what he wanted. Some Good characters may not want to come back as they figured they have earned thier rest, while other will feel that they have something unfinished in thier mortal life and will be willing to come back....
thats just my 2 cents. ;)
