The Classic 1E modules - an exclusive list

Where is ravenloft on the list? Surely you must include an adventure so good it launched a setting. It was the best I ever played or DMed. That oe and the Tomb of Horrors still give me chills.

I6: Ravenloft surely is more deserving than virtually everything on that list so far, imo (GDQ excepted).

As for DragonLance, DL-1 & 2's novelization "Dragons of Autumn Twilight sold 18 million copies in 50 languages, and spawned 130 odd sequels so far. I believe it remains the best selling module from First Edition. You don't get more "shared experience" than Dragons of Despair. That said, it is a deeply flawed module in its design (as mentioned) and is story-centric, if story-sentric is a move away from 1E.

I would say, however, that the "Event" structure in DL1 was innovative at the time and has been used endlessly since.

Nearly 20 years later, DL8's Tower of the High Clerist remains the largest (and coolest) castle map ever released for D&D.

Did you notice how Ravenloft is on the list? :)

I dare say the biggest shared experience module in the game is B2: Keep on the Borderlands. I'm not sure how shared an experience DL1 is - I'm sure many people have it, but how many played it?

Cheers!

Besides the modules listed so far, I've always had a fondness for .... name.... .. Citadel by the Sea in Dragon Mag #.... I can't remember the issue number, and I hope I've got the name correct. :)

I must dig out my DMA - it's around somewhere. I had all the files copied to my hard drive, but I reformatted my computer at the beginning of the year and haven't gotten around to copying them back on yet.

Cheers!

Speaking of classic Dragon modules, let's not forget Fedifensor!

btw, does anyone know which modules are the best selling modules from the 1e/Basic/Expert days?

An excellent question, John!

B2 and X1, definitely. :)

After that, I don't know.

Cheers!
