The Closed Eye (DM: Halford, Judge: garyh)

Tander continues to search in the darkness of the sewers, trying to make Palindrome's latest distraction worthwhile. "Woe, help me look," Tander whispers. Tander's eyes flit back and forth, the whites of his eyes illuminated by Palindrome's explosion.

OOC: Perception 13. With Woe's help that would be a 15...

Atreus takes directions from Tander and whispers to them to follow him. He pushes the group onward through the sewers as fast as he can, hoping to gain some distance from their pursuers by Palindromes explosive distraction.

[sblock=OOC] I am sorry for the delay. My internet has been down since I returned home from Iceland, but it is up and running now. I have spoken to Dunamin and he is pretty busy with his project and rl, so he didn't say when he would have time to post, but I am sure of that he still wants to play.

Tander and Woe between them spy a recessed alcove several feet above the surface of the muck.

Arnest leaps up and smoothly pulls himself into the alcove. From his new vantage he can see a frail-looking wooden door at the top of a short flight of stairs.

ooc: 7 success, 2 failure. Everyone is up again. Atriden, thanks for the word from Dunamin.

Palindrome casts Grasping Shadows down the tunnel. (The spell creates a zone that slows people walking through it.)

---

"You guys head up before me!" Palindrome shouts, pulling on a pair of gloves.

After the party enters the door, Palindrome will take solid waste from the sewer, mix it with the broken glass in his pockets, and smear it on the handle of the door and the floor of the alcove.

"Caltrops," he mutters, "I need caltrops."

Palindrome's illusion slows the pursuit.

[sblock=ooc]+2 to the next two skill checks this round. We need one more success...

Atreus passes the others and runs to towards the wooden door, and silently but quickly opens it.
[sblock=OOC]
If the door is locked, he uses thievery or if it is not locked, he uses stealth to hide their trail or something like that. Got 21 for thievery or Stealth.

The door's lock is heavily obscured under rust, grime, and some kind of whitish growth that seems to glow faintly. Atreus, casting an experienced eye over it, gives it a sharp blow with the pommel of his dagger. The lock crumbles like dried cow excrement underfoot. The party quickly ducks through the door into daylight, closing the door behind them on fading cries of bafflement and consternation.

The door leads into a narrow alley between ramshackle rows of dilapidated houses, built close enough together that the eaves overlap above. To the south, the gilded spire of the temple of Lauto reflects the rays of the dying sun into the alley, providing some orientation: you are on the north side of Daunton, in one of the many residential districts shabby enough to provide a home for Daunton's manual laborers, but not yet collapsed into ruins. The streets are quiet, but not silent; snatches of low-voiced conversation drift into the alley as residents return home. No one seems to have noticed you yet in the alley.

[sblock=ooc]Success on the skill challenge; the guards have lost the trail for now. What's next?

Palindrome smears the door with excrement and glass, then exits the sewers after the party. Above ground, he uses prestidigitation to clean himself. He removes his hat, buttons up his coat, and takes a cord to bind the calves and ankles of his overalls, so they end up looking like knickers or jodphurs. He uses prestidigitation to change the color of his outfit.

ooc: I imagine you guys are probably due for an extended rest. Where will you go, and is there anything else you want to get done before then?
