The Coldlands War, Part I

Ursus
"Our group is prepared. What is our mission, sir?"

Jacques nods. "Good."

"Your mission is really quite simple. Since your group ended up with the token wizard, we felt that it would be wise to send you to take care of a magic-user in the Coldlands. South of here, near the town of Balcony, there is supposedly a tower where a wizard lives. How or why he's there, we don't know - but the higher-ups don't want someone using magic in the Coldlands when armies start marching, and all our attempts to draft him have failed. He must be eliminated."

"We hope that, with the wizard you have, you'll be better-equipped to handle fighting a magic-user. As you know, the forces oppose each other... technology may malfunction when used against the magic-user. Having a wizard of your own will even the playing field, somewhat."

"The town of Balcony is one of the towns that grew up along the railway after it was built. It's somewhat small, but you should be able to get some supplies and directions to the tower there. The structure itself is obvious, since it's a tower, but navigating the snowfields there may prove difficult."

He looks around at the group. "You're to eliminate the magic-user, and return here. You'll be able to use the railway, so it shouldn't take too long to get down there and return. We'll need proof that you took out the magic-user... he's sure to have something unusual."

"Any questions?"

Tyliss's eyes light up with an otherworldly glow. "Yes. I would be very helpful with that undertaking." Thoughts of new spells and magic items fill is head.

"What do you know of this Magus? Do you have a name for him?"

Great. A wizard. And magic... It creeped Elkus out. He didn't like magic, and there seemed little reason to provoke a wizard who seemed like he was minding his own business. "But... why not leave him alone, if I may ask? Has he done anything wrong against us? Is he a threat at all? Just leave wizards to their brews and potions and what-not," asked Elkus.

"But... why not leave him alone, if I may ask? Has he done anything wrong against us? Is he a threat at all? Just leave wizards to their brews and potions and what-not,"

"His mere presence is a threat." Jacques says, his voice slightly condescending. "As you know, magic, psionics, and technology - the three forces - are all naturally opposed to one another. The war we are about to engage in is not just a war between nations, but also between forces - the Coldlands is the only nation that actively promotes technology. Any wizard in the Coldlands that isn't drafted will recognize this, and begin working to sabotage our efforts."

"That is why we must make a pre-emptive strike on the wizards inhabiting the Coldlands. Fortunately, most chose to side with the military, where their actions can be closely watched; those that didn't must be hunted and terminated."

Eikasia adjusts its cranial dome to "face" the officer, the melodic voice ringing out, "it seems as it seems." The artilect then returns its gaze to the wall, from within the darkness of its cranial dome a bluish light can be seen filtering opaquely through.

Tyliss who is still sulking on his bunk speaks up, "Well It seems we're off to a rollicking start. We have to intrude on a magus of unknown power and unknown motives. Sounds like an easy enough task. Do the rest of you have any next of kin?"

Not waiting for the others to reply He continues, "And what is to be done with any magic we find there? Is that ours to keep or must that be handed over to the Coldlands?"

OoC: Sorry about that Ferrix, I was trying to figure out what you knew when I remembered I had to roll it... at least you're using all your bad luck now, though. :)

"And what is to be done with any magic we find there? Is that ours to keep or must that be handed over to the Coldlands?"

"You'll report here with it." Jacques says. "It would only be of interest to you, anyhow... if there is something you find useful, you will probably be allowed to keep it. Anything extraordinarily dangerous, of course, will have to be handed over. Other than that, what to do with what you find is up to you."
