Heh. Right now I've commited myself to the SRD material, but I'm still uncertain about anything else. I'm worried I may hit a serious point of diminishing returns in the effort.

Sell the file as a RTF to authors. I'd buy a tool like that.

Me too - I've been excited about the Beast Builder ever since hearing you talk about it at Gen Con Indy, and having building blocks from it as a RTF file would be cool indeed.

P.S. Thanks for correcting the Masters and Minions entry, Quillon!

I'm interested in the Beast Builder, but I'd have to hear a little more detail before I know exactly how excited to be about it. I really really like monsters & templates (I'm one of the guys Alan mentions in his Advanced Bestiary review -- AB is going up on my shelf next to the Monster's Handbook and Book of Templates Deluxe Edition), and while anything that make creating them easier is good, I don't need alot of basic level instruction.

Cheers
Nell.

As far as tackling Challenge Ratings and creature building, I must admit that I'm still partial to Craig Cochrane's "Challenging Challenge Ratings" and "Encountering Encounter Levels" document (Version 4 is available in House Rules, IIRC), and the version of the same that appeared in Grim Tales.

I was planning to put it up as a PDF with the traditional 100% OGC and no restrictions on copy/paste. Is there, for you guys, a practical difference in the two file formats?

Well, a longer discription is that I'm going to break down every aspect of the monster stat block and tell the reader what's interconnected and if this changes, what needs to be changed as well. I'll deal a little bit with the accepted common formating of creatures and I'll list every SA/SQ in the SRD (perhaps more-I'll have to see) so making a new creature should be much faster.

Also, every SA/SQ will have a list of monsters that have that ability to provide quick access to comparables. On top of that, I've broken down all the monsters into 20 different groups based upon what they do; break 'em down by function. That also will be a great help in designing new creatures.

There will also be a section about integrating monsters into ecologies, on diversity in creatures types according to regional areas, and I'll introduce a new monster concept: the agressive ecology. A monster that's an entire environment hostile to the PCs. Such a thing is great for planar adventures and for ecological nightmare heroic adventures.

It's going to be a big book, with hopefully a good balance between fluff and crunch.

I've got grim tales and it will be in the Section 15.... :)

Just think what a great tool it would be, though.

We planned on doing this for Denizens of Avadnu with just all of the special abilities from the SRD. We had it finished, but when we were done, it was ridiculously large. We figured in layout alone it would take around 80 pages to print. Joe, if you didn't compile that yet, let me know. I still might have it somewhere. . .

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Rock on!

On a similar note, and I'm not sure whether this fits into the scope of your book or not: have you checked out the equations Cheiromancer and Anubis developed for the IH/GT Challenege Rating system? This is probably the best way to link to it: http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1834967#post1834967 - though there's some neat information in the posts above.

I think Cheiromancer had been meaning to put that experience system into a free OGLed .pdf, but I'm not sure he ever got around to it. Finding Anubis to give him proper credit might be a bit sticky, too, since he hasn't been on the boards since September. But the equations are definately worth checking out. I've been awarding experience from encounters using the equations for a few months, and I've recommended them in several threads.

Anyways, I'm really looking forward to your upcoming product!

When cutting and pasting from a PDF, I always seem to have to put a little work into re-formatting, fixing characters like apostrophes that don't come across right, etc. Not a big deal, but that's why a RTF file would be nice (you could include it in the same .zip file) - or at least much appreciated by .01% of your audience!

For this reason, one of the things that's been on my to-do list is making the original .rtf files for our books available as a download for registered owners, to make it easier for players to create campaign folders, for publishers to re-use our OGC, etc.

I'm not sure it would be in a useable format for me since I'm doing several different steps with each monster and I'd worry that changing the process right now would result in missing something. However, I'd love to see it anyway because it could save me quite a bit of time. josephbrowning@exp.citymax.com will accept an attachment. Thanks for the offer, very kind of you.

Ok, I hadn't thought about that way. We'll I'll either include it in the download or make it available to other developers through direct e-mail contact. I'll have to think about it a bit.

jgbrowning,

since you doing the Monster Geographica series (An excellent Idea that I love and will be getting for chistmass or buying after chistmass. Everyone in my family made me stop buying books so they could buy me presents.) I was wondering what books on this list you don't have or don't have access too?

Oh and will we see a Monster Geographica: Any Land
