The Concept Is... he DOESN'T use a sword.

That's how I'd do it, too, or at the least 1d12. That's why the FRCS maul - and lack of a core greathammer - is such an enigma to me.

I'm trying to get over it. Really. ;)

I've long thought the maul SHOULD have been an exotic, usable two-handed as a martial weapon a la the bastard sword.

One of my favorite characters fought with a halberd. Any reason why the halberd wasn't considered a reach weapon in 3e? I mean, it's a polearm. That's kinda the point. Did it get changed in 3.5?

Because, when combined with its ability to be set against a charge, giving the halberd reach would have overpowered it with respect to the other two-handed martial weapons available.

I don't really play fighters with any specific weapon in mind.

One of my favorites didn't carry any weapons. He had improved unarmed and improved disarm and would snatch weapons from others and use them. After the fight he would toss them away.

There is too many different weapon types to find, so most of my 3e fighters have not taken weapon specific feats.

Of my other players, they seem to create a character concept and then pick weapons that fit. I haven't seen an abundance of swords.
