Interestingly, I'm seeing a reference to the creature as having been written up for 1E AD&D in Dragon issue #89, Creature Catalog I, as the "Ihagnim".

Unfortunately, my Dragon magazine CD archive is missing that article -- it was a feature in the center that wasn't paginated with the rest of the magazine (first time I ever noticed that). Maybe someone has issue #89 kicking around, with the article still attached.

I have it. It's annoying that the CD archive misses it - their are some great monsters in that article.

The Ihagnim is insanely powerful. 16 HD (remember, this is 1st ed), with an attack which kills after one round, as you get absorbed into it. It lurks in the astral plane, and the bags of devouring are the lures it extends into the prime material.

Anyone want more details?

EDIT: Ah, someone's posted the whole thing. Nice one!

That is truly a classic article. There are some great creatures within. I'm always pushing the utukku in queries to Dragon, and the explodestool remains one of the funniest monster names ever. :p
