The Current State of "Simple d20"?

Thanks for commenting, jdrakeh! Your news tidbit is intriguing, too. I've been considering buying that Fudge book for some time. I think I'm just going to print and bind my copy of FATE though, since they took Fudge and did so very many things right with it. And then they threw in another dice mechanic to go with it if you don't like Fudge's.

Anywho - that's enough off-topicness for now. I second der_kluge's call for more information on Omni system!

True20 is pretty much the perfect game system for me. It hits almost every note just right. Unfortunately, for this specific purpose, I want easy compatibility with existing d20 material, and mainly because of the Damage Save mechanic, True20 complete falls down.

I don't see how True 20 completely falls down here. The True 20 appendix contains comprehensive conversion material that allows you to change the damage system in True 20 to D20 and vice versa very simply and easily.

Using the appendix makes convertin d20 monsters a breeze. It takes me no more than a few seconds to convert a D20 monster to True 20.

If you want to keep a D20 damage system in True 20 instead, it isn't hard to do so and this removes the need for any conversion other than PCs:

Toughness to Hit Points - Adepts get a d6, Experts a d8 and Warriors a d10.
Damage bonus to Damage dice - +0 is 1d3, +1 is 1d4, +2 is 1d6, +3 is 1d8, +4 is a 1d10
Healing - Use the existing D&D rules for HP healing. True 20 deals with converting healling magic in some detail.
Armour bonus - I would convert Armour bonus into a DR dice system like in Iron Heroes, using the Damage conversion system above.

What exactly do you find so challenging about the conversion?

We're working on something at Big Finger Games called the OGL Basic Set. We've got some more design hurdles to conquer, but if we can pull it off we think its simplicity will be pretty revolutionary. There'll posts on this board when we finish it.

Count me in for the number wanting "d20 Lite". D&D seems to be too much. C&C is a bit too old school in certain aspects, though I love the basics of the system. True20 gets away from some of the archetype themes that I dig so much, but I love its feat system. I've used it as a model for feats in my own game.

Personally, I like the basic concepts of D&D, but I don't care for the complexity it has, especially where combat is concerned. Problem is, the whole system is combat-centric.

I almost feel that, in order to have what I want in a role-playing system, I'm going to have to write my own sourcebook. *sigh* :(
