The Daredevil AdC: who plays it?

The Shaman

First Post
None of the players in the game I run have ever taken the Daredevil AdC, and I can't recall every statting an NPC with levels in Daredevil. :\

Does anyone use this class?

If I ever get to actually play (not DM) modern I'll try it out. I always wanted to create an extreme sport character like xXx
The only problem is the poor base attack progression. It doesn't fit well with a tough as nails macho PC.

I played in a d20 Modern game this summer where one of the PC's was a daredevil, the character was an extreme sports athlete/motorcycle racer. It's certainly not the most popular AdC, but I do see it get a little use.

Both of the Tough AdCs have weak attack progressions, to compensate for their overall ability to shrug off damage that would lay out Strong or Fast heroes.

When I first bought d20 Modern, I wanted to play a character who was a professional mountain biker - imagine my dismay to discover the core rules didn't even mention bicycles at all! (That wouldn't come until Urban Arcana... :\ ) If I ever get the chance, I'll create a Fast/Tough hero and ask the GM to let me sub Balance ranks for Drive so I can get into the Daredevil AdC.

One of my players briefly considered it. Then he gave me his verdict on why it was bad. "Basically, all I can see is that I get the ability to stand up and fall down really fast."

It's not XTREME. The extreme explorer from Eberron is much better at that -- bonus action points, bigger action dice, an encouragement to try stunts. The daredevil is rather bland.

Actually a lot of the advanced classes are that way.

Come now, Shaman. Haven't you realized that most prestige classes suck? ;)

I'll be honest, I think most of the class abilities from PrC's should be re-worked into feats or new talent trees, ala Grim Tales. I think PrC's should be used for what they seem most suited for; when the character becomes a member of a society. The new Eberron book has a few perfect examples of this, with prestige classes based on secret societies and government agencies.

I've got a PC daredevil. He wears medium armor so lost out on nip-up. (The first three levels were basically useless to him.)

However, read the errata on the stat-boosting abilities. You can stack them twice using your Action Boost/Surge ability.

The Bodyguard has 3/4 BAB. IMO you should take one or three Strong levels for Melee Smash, as it's pretty boring if you can't dish out some damage, too. The first two or three bodyguard levels give you nice abilities without hurting your attack bonus too much. (See Combat Sense, or whatever it's called, if you think the BAB is too low. It turns the first four levels into a +1 BAB/level class.)

Yeah, the Daredevil class, from what I've seen, is "Boost your stats". That's the only reason I've seen anyone take it. When I made someone play one in a pre-genned-PCs one-shot, I made sure that there were times when everyone fell down so that he could Nip Up and feel useful. :)

I've considered building one based off a combination of Johnny Knoxville, Bam Mergera, and Steve-O.
Just a big lunkhead who is willing to try anything, and can shrug off the damage with ease.
C'mon, what's more X-Treem? Mountain Biking or Wearing a shock collar and getting sprayed by a skunk? :D
