The Deabilitator (Wizard) - need advice

I'm looking to make a character for a new campaign. We're starting at level 6. I generally come up with a personality that I would enjoy playing, then build a character around that.

This character will be a semi-pacifist. As in, he never wants to deal direct damage to an opponent, instead, he will only work to disable and deabilitate those who attack his party, as well as provide protection for his friends.

I'm looking for any input you guys may have. I was going to specialize in abjuration or enchantment, and get rid of evocation and necromancy... but I like the ability draining spells, and blindness/deafness from the necromancy school... Not that big of a deal though.

One thing that bugs me about most spells is the all or nothing saving throw. It seems WAY too easy for opponents to make saving throws, so I generally skip over spells that give an all-or-nothing save. Any input on this area, and if I'm misguided in thinking this, would be appreciated also.

Anyhow, just any input on how I could pull this off without sucking really bad would be appreciated.

You might want to consider the Beguiler (if PHBII is available). It could work well for that type of character.

Wizards are largely defined by spell selection. You can create the pc you want with this in mind. You don't need a PRC to guide your role playing needs. Useful spells to reflect your pc's personality:

1st: Protection from evil, shield, sleep, charm, color spray, grease & exp retreat
2nd: fog cloud, pro vs arrows, mirror image, spectral hand, ghoul touch, touch of idiocy
3rd: Dispel Magic, invisibility sphere, haste, stinking cloud

there are many many
