I could (maybe) see it if the DM were an arbiter between two competing groups of player characters....but that was a relatively rare playstyle even when the game was about murderhobos and dungeon-heisting, let alone today.

It's funny that this entire argument is resolved with capitalization.

A DM is playing the D&D game. They play a game, so they are a player.

The DM does not have a Player Character. So as DM, they are not a Player.

Is a DM a player? Yes. Is a DM a Player? No.
