The DM turned me into a cleric!

DWARF

First Post
So, after about a year or so of gaming, we've gotten to about 9th level or so with no character deaths yet.

We run into this strange interplanar being, not quite a demon, but not a good guy either. He's locked in a wizards dungeon and we free him and as a reward he gives us each a 'gift'. Basically, my Kord worshipping mainline meatshield fighter ends up dead and before what I think is Kord, or an agent of him. Long story short, I am 'reborn' with my wisdom going from 10 to 18, and I get a free level of cleric. So, now I'm a cleric....

I'm in a group of level 10 characters as a Fighter 9 / Cleric 1. Some more specifics:
Str 18, Dex 18, Con 14, Int 16, Wis 18, Cha 9 (Hey, I rolled everything but the Wisdom that high, Dex got my 2 boosts from levels)

Concentration 5 ranks, Handle animal 12r, Intimidate 12r, Jump 4r, Ride 12r, Swim 6r (that's not all, but the rest is languages and a rank or two in some knowledges.)

Feats: Combat Reflexes, Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Bastard Sword), Expertise, Improved Critical (Bastard Sword), Leadership, Mounted Archery, Mounted Combat, Power Attack, Ride-by-Attack, Improved Evasion.

So my question is, what do you suggest I do with him? I mean, people in the group are about 50-100 HP's about now, and I have 2 Cure Light Wounds a day. The DM runs a magic low world, at least, there is no magic in the economy, so no buying wands of CLW and such... And the reduced amount of feats at this point is going to get me since scribe scroll is 2 levels off, brew potion as a level 15 feat? Kinda low-powered at that point...

Any ideas?

You're a priest. Preach! Use bless to encourage your buddies to do the bidding of Kord. Appreciate your blessing. Sure, you're never gonna turn undead, but you can smack down minor badguys with holy whoopass. Rely on your god-given talents as a fighter for most challenges, but always be on the lookout for folks you can beat down with divine wrath.

Get the domains Strength and Luck!

You can be a real badass fighter with the granted powers Feat of Strength (when second level as cleric) and Good Fortune. Use Enlarge Person as your domain spell to get +2 Str and 10' Reach. Use Divine Favor and Bless to hit better and harder.

Woah. Had exactly the same situation with a level 9 fighter in my old group... fascinating.
Well, that PC there had even better stats... ;)

What is your kind of game?? What I do understand in your post is "What the hell will I do from a level of cleric to bash things?" I would say that maybe there could be more to it than gaining things to bash monsters. Why don't you take it from a roleplaying perspective. That is: your character saw Kord while he was dead (his spirit rushing to the afterlife realms), and it was a shock that changed him forever. As a result he has gone a great wisdom (this reminds me of what I did read about people who had near-death experiences) and a spiritual experience so now he turned to more religious outlook on life, with an appropriate change in behaviour. This is an opportunity for fun rpg; but now if your game is but monsters bashing... mmmh... I fear this is a hopeless situation. :(

I dont see how its hopeless, the cleric is a second teir combatant. Grab another level in fighter, and then take the other 10 as cleric.

Sure you wont be as good as that 20 ftr, but then again, you have 10 cleric levels of spells to augment your abilities. :-D

What I was meaning is... If it's just ROLL-play, thus it is hopeless. I mean, such a kind of roleplaying game is hopeless, IMO. Just better play some DnD computer game in this case.

First you may want to take a look at the Hospitaler class from the Defenders of the Faith supplement. Its probably the best Fighter/Cleric cross you will find. Though it puts some restrictions on role play to following a specific code of conduct (sort of like a paladin - I think original intention of PrC).

Pump up your Healing skill. At the current level you are not going to be able to heal people during combat for any thing worth while, but you will be able to save them if they go down (most of the time) and even then you will run out of Healing spells, thus Healing skill can stop a person from going negative and dying.

Other than that, not sure.

Did the DM just spring this on you with no warning? Did you tell him you aren't happy about it? Did the other players get similar gifts? Do the other characters even know?

I need more details about where you are coming from before helping you get somewhere you want to be.

Oh, what ever will you do?

"Start succeeding at your will saves" would be my first guess. :p

Beyond that, don't underestimate the power of "Protection vs. [Fubar]" as they all provide a suppressive mental shield against compulsions, with the Umber Hulk's confusing gaze attack being a lovely and notable example.

And, as previously noted, revel in your ability to get domain powers on the cheap. If you can, be sure to check against other books (Forgotten Realms especially) for more bizarre and esoteric domains that don't rely on your cleric level for you to be able to use their power. The Luck domain is quite nice that way.

HiH,
