The Dragon Compendium Volume 1 preview in the new Dragon?

It's not that much of a preview (though it does mention some converted monsters). In his editorial, Erik gives it a fairly large paragraph of text, though he doesn't give much away. Here's the excerpt:

THE DRAGON COMPENDIUM (VOLUME I)
DUNGEON isn't the only magazine to get the hardcover treatment. In October, Paizo will release The DRAGON Compendium (Volume 1), a 256-page collection of some of the greatest articles ever published in this magazine, updated to the latest edition of the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS rules (MSRP $39.95). A true collection of the best DRAGON articles would fill several volumes, which is precisely why we're calling this one "Volume 1." Developed by fan-favorite designer (and new Wizards of the Coast employee) Mike Mearls, the books features a return of the orange, purple, and yellow dragons, classes like the death master, sha'ir, and savant, and as much great content from the past as we can fit between the covers.

GAH!!!!

I own the CD-ROM, so I'd decided not to buy the "Best Of" compendium. And then I read the above-emphasizedline.

Sigh. Guess I'll be betting it after all... :p

My sentiments exactly. ;)

I'd previously read that it would be 3.5E, and that was my reaction too. Dragon has always had some of the best material, and knowing that the choiciest bits would be updated to 3.5E is too good to pass up.

EDIT: So, let's start the guessing game about what else will be in here. I'm thinking Ed Greenwood's material on the Nine Hells is pretty near definite (issues #75, #76, and #91 IIRC). I'm also hoping that the ferrous dragons (issue #170, currently being converted over in the Creatures forum) are there too.

Heck, I'l buy it just for the updated classes (deathmaster, etc.). I once offered to do those as a series of articles. Now I understand why Erik turned it down. :)

Sure, it would've been nice to put my own stamp on them, but I'm delighted to have someone else do the work for me.

"orange, purple, and yellow dragons": meh...

"classes like the death master, sha'ir, and savant": updated to 3e? oh yeah!

So, I think I will buy this.

I have been am eagerly awaiting the return of the yellow and purple dragons, have always wanted a thorough explanation of the Sha'ir, and am just stoked about this book in general. I was mainly excited to get this issue because of the Ptolus preview, but there's been more on montecook.com than there was in Dragon. I'm still not sure about the Shackled City adventure path, but I definately want the Dragon Compendium.

People keep mentioning the sha'ir, but from what I understand, that's that arcane spellcasting class from Al-Qadim, right (that's the only sha'ir that I know, anyway)? That was already featured in 3.5E in issue #315. I wouldn't mind seeing it again in the Dragon Compendium, but it wouldn't be the first time.

Some pretty big hints might be gathered from perusing the thread Erik Mona started asking what our favorite Dragon articles were ;)
