The Duom, Exotic or Martial, you be the judge.

Hullo and welcome.

Today's topic is the Duom. There are 2 types only decided by there proficiency classification.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
- In the Sword and Fist (S&F) which is a 3rd ED. book it states its an Exotic weapon.
Large
Duom 20g 1d8 x3 8lb Piercing

Duom:The duom is a longspear with a standard spear-
head, as well as two blades curved so that they point
backward along the shaft. The weapon has reach, allow-
ing you to strike opponents 10 feet away with it. Those
proficient with the spear can also use it to attack adjacent
foes with the reversed heads with a practiced “reverse
thrust.” Apply a +2 bonus to the attack roll for the first
attack made by the duom against an adjacent opponent.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
- But in the Dragon Compendium (DC), which was first printed in 2005 so its clearly a 3.5 Ed book states its a Martial weapon.

the duom to attack a second adjacent opponent in the
same round you attacked the first opponent. Author:
Jason Bulmahn, Ari Marmell, et al. Source: #331.

In my opinion it should not be a Martial weapon cause of the extra combat maneuver it gives the player.

I agree that it sounds exotic, even the 3.5 version with the penalty, but I'm glad it is martial, and I'll look into using this!

I don't think any reach + adjacent weapon should be less than exotic. I also think the DC version is poorly written and too "wordy." The S&F one is much better designed, I'd use that one. Possibly getting rid of the +2 bonus part, or at least specifying that it's the first time used against an adjacent foe each combat that you gain the bonus.

The Arms & Equipment version has essentially the same description as DC, but is exotic. That's what I'd use.

Agreed.

Oh cool, looks like I missed the one in the A&E guide. Thnx now i have a valid argument for the DM. :P
Wait, you're not the DM? Are you arguing against another player? Because, in general, it's the DM that tends to want wording of things to be stricter, while the players like having more options.

I'm not gonna lie here but its me being an ass...cause the guy is already playing a Crusader and the guy is annoying....and he said i was wrong...
Wow this is good therapy.

Note how I added extra emphasis on its size. If it were proper 3.5 material, it would simply omit the size and say it's Two-Handed, and even that is iffy since it clearly says the weapon is a modified longspear. It's most definitely an Exotic weapon though and any non-proficient wielder wouldn't be able to use the extra maneuver in addition to taking the standard -4 nonproficiency penalty.

Oh sorry my bad, in the DC it states its Two-Handed.
