The Entire D&D 5E SRD Is Now On FANTASY GROUNDS

If you use Fantasy Grounds to run your D&D 5E games (and many of you do), you'll be pleased to know that the newly released D&D System Reference Document is now on the VTT software in its entirety. It's available to anybody with a non-demo account, and comes automatically with any new accounts. Fantasy Grounds' Doug Davison says "We started work on converting over the new SRD content as soon as it was announced on Tuesday and quickly decided to make this a free update. This means that people can play D&D on Fantasy Grounds for as little as $10/mo for an entire group or just $4/mo for those who want to use it to help manage their campaigns for local play. (Non-subscription options are available too) The contents of the SRD are huge and we think it really shines on the Fantasy Grounds platform."

He goes on to explain: "For ease of play, we've divided the SRD content into three distinct modules - the SRD Data, SRD Bestiary and SRD Magic Items. The SRD Data contains all the reference material, races and classes for use in building and leveling characters and basic equipment, armor and weapons that can be used for characters and to aid play at the table or online. The SRD Bestiary is a module that the GM will probably choose not to share in its entirety but will allow the GM to quickly build encounters as they prep their session or on the fly. Since there are no images in the SRD, we've linked as many of these as possible to the top-down style tokens we licensed a year or so ago. Again, these are all included in the module for free. Finally, the magic items are presented as magic item templates from the SRD but are forged with existing equipment to use items which are usable by characters. In addition, the GM will be able to combine multiple effects with equipment to crank out some really unique items or item sets.

In addition to this, we continue to sell fully licensed modules for those people who want all of the content, the images and the extra bells and whistles we've added to those products. In fact, we just started work on the next big release from Wizards of the Coast. I think it's going to be a big hit with the D&D community."

Fantasy Grounds is the official licensed virtual tabletop software for D&D 5th Edition. Find it here.

Wow. Fantastic, but, a bit of a piss off to those of us that bought the PHB and MM packages. I'm so glad I dropped a hundred bucks on that only to have 90% of it released for free three months later. Woot. Grr.

But cool news nonetheless. I guess I should have waited.

That's absolutely terrific. I have always wanted to use FG as my reference for prep when I'm away from my books, but couldn't justify paying for the MM for that reason alone. Now I get that functionality for free (or, most of it). Happy camper. :)

To those who already bought the core books, erm, at least you get the artwork??

There's no images, no maps, no fluff text. As well, the text is incomplete. Only having some spells, monsters, 1 archtype/class, 1 feat, etc. Its very limited. This is not meant as a play product, but as a design guide for people who want to produce material under the OGL.

I was a Fantasy Grounds hold out. Finally got the program and it is continually impressing me. The SRDs updates are not everything in the PHB but it took me less than 5 seconds to update the program. Painless.

That's understandable. As cool as it is, I suspect many people will still want to go with the full versions at some point. It considerably helps those who already own the books and didn't want to turn around and buy stuff twice -- especially without really knowing what it would look like. Now they have a much better idea of what that "content" is within Fantasy Grounds. If you *really* want the full choices pre-loaded for archetypes for a class, you can just grab the extra class for a few bucks, but otherwise there will be a lot of people that run with just this info for a while.

Since you already have the PHB and MM modules for FG, I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the DD5E SRD Magic Items section and the forge. In addition, there are a bunch of tables - mostly for magic items but I'm sure you can imagine the large # of tables that are in the full DMG. All the item pics are pretty sweet as well.

So I keep looking at this stuff, and saying "tomorrow". Is the Ultimate License a one-time deal, or do I need to re-subscribe on an annual basis or something?

(I know I need to buy the adventure packs separately).

It is either a 1-time purchase OR a $10/mo monthly subscription.

If you are just looking at using it as a tool to manage your local campaign or your players will get their own license, it drops to a 1-time $39 payment or $4/mo.
