The ENWorld Electric Bard Gear (Etc) Thread

Some, yeah. But I suspect most will survive.

Most of the time I see boutique pedal makers go under, it’s due to an accumulation of non-business BS, stress from meeting demand, or- occasionally- making sucky pedals.

I bought a whole bunch of Magnetic Effects pedals. Eventually, the builder decided to move to another country (Japan?) and do something completely different with their life.

ARC Effects goes on unexplained hiatuses every once in a while. Eventually, they won’t come back.

It’s rare that we outsiders get the real story.
I generally don't buy boutique pedals for two reasons, first, I haven't really looked but never came across any that interested me while browsing and getting spammed with ads. Second, from what I understand they can be pretty pricey. I usually stick with the tried-and-true brands, Boss, TCE, EHX, Digitech, Way Huge, Dunlop. Every once in a while, you get a stinker but for the most part they're good and last unless you use and abuse them on a daily basis. I have pedals I haven't even plugged in yet as I'm sure you probably do too. Funny, even though I own quite a few guitars, there are 2-3 that I pick up more often than not over the others. I was working on a Tele last night and was looking at a few that I haven't played in a very long time and started thinking it might be time to start making some room.

@Dannyalcatraz you're in the Dallas Fort Worth area, correct? Ever see At the Drive In or the Mars Volta? I saw the MV twice, once at the Agora Theater 2008 in Cleveland for the Bedlam in Goliath tour, which was top 5 live shows I've ever seen. Drummer on that CD was beyond incredible Thomas Pridgen. Saw them again in Buffalo they played the Town Ballroom (950 ppl capacity) in 2011. It was billed as an Omar-Rodriguez Lopez but it was really a Mars Volta show doing a test run for the Noctourniquet CD. That was cool seeing them do songs you never heard before. Their band Antemasque was great too. Anyhow I digress.

Watched this last night and it was good. Worth the $4 if you're a fan. Mars Volta Doc. I remember hearing about this 2005-2007 or so that Omar had video'd the band from its inception, finally came out.

I’ve never had the good fortune to see any of those 3 bands. JEALOUS!

I started playing bass when I was 8, and studied for a couple of great guys in my teens. I was touring for 4 years in my early 20ies, but somewhere there I lost my passion, playing became more of a work to pay my bills. So I decided to keep music as a hobby, started Uni instead, and have only been playing in semipro contexts for the last 35 years, for fun and relaxation, keeping it around 15-20 gigs/year.

As to gear, I have a custom built Windmill 5-string that's amazing, a couple of Fender Js and Ps, a Rick and a great Lighthouse fretless. Most of the basses are stringed with either Thomastik jazz flats or D'addario black nylons. Except the Rick of course, where everything but Rotosound steels are blasphemy ;-)

I have a couple of Aguilar amps and cabs, and use either a mini or a larger pedalboard depending on project and genre. Pedals on the boards vary with mood and fancy, but I still use Sansamp VTDI as my pedal preamp sound motor. The Sansamps are getting old and there are lots of newer and shinier preamps around, but I'm comfy with their sound and I know how they sound when DI:s, so I keep them on the boards.

Every regular concert goer has sob stories and glorious tales!
Me and a friend bought tickets for Lalapalooza 2003. $70 each. Think it was the first year the tour came back after a hiatus. We went to see Audioslave. There was probably 6-7 bands on the lineup so I didnt think much of $70 for a GA ticket. Long story short, we ended up in the pit. Band was 10 feet away. Great show.

I went to Lollapalooza 1991 & 2003. I count them among my best concerts.

1991 was the first one correct?

2003 was a great show, we walked around until Audioslave was about to go on. We got up to the section where the seats started and showed our tickets to the usher he said, see that guy over there, talk to him and he'll direct you to your seats...OK, this happened about 4-5 times all while me and my buddy are just looking at each other confused each time an usher directed us closer to the stage until we ended up front and center. Best $70 I spent that year.

Have you ever heard the leaked Civilian demos from 2002 that became the first Audioslave CD? Listen close and there's quite a bit of difference. I actually like the rawer sound and production. Rick Rubin has some good CDs on his resume, but I think he's overrated

1991 was the first, yes. NIN was the band I wanted to see most, but when L91 rolled into D/FW, they were no longer a part of it. They were replaced in that slot by Fishbone.

Let me be 100% clear: my disappointment at the lineup change was fleeting. Fishbone- a band I liked anyway- gave one HELL of a performance. Good setlist, high-energy. Honestly, one of the better sets of the whole show.
